WASHINGTON - President Bush acknowledged Friday that the situation in Iraq was tough and said he would consult with American generals to see if a change in tactics was necessary to combat the escalating violence.
Seventy-four American troops have died in Iraq in October, which is likely to become the deadliest month for U.S. forces in nearly two years.
One of the reasons youre seeing more casualties is the enemy is active and so are our troops, Bush said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. He said he planned consultations in the next day with Gen. John Abizaid, the top U.S. commander in the Middle East, and Gen. George Casey, who leads the U.S.-led Multinational Forces in Iraq.
We are constantly adjusting tactics so we can achieve our objectives and right now, its tough, the president said.
He declined to say whether he thought such a change was necessary.
The president has often said that U.S. goals in Iraq remain the same: to have a country that can sustain itself, govern itself and help in the war on terror.

Hey, MSM IDIOTS:
A change in TACTICS is not a change in STRATEGY.
They consult all the time. He is always asking if they need anything, or if we should change tactics.
After IGNORING this for a year, now the media wants to POINT IT OUT as if it's something new and signals something bad.
Oddly, it's "exactly what the democrats wanted", and I presume the media thinks it will depress republican turnout.
Misleading headline. He has said time and again that he consults and listens to the requests of the Generals and soldiers on the ground.
Heard a left wing talk radio show host say the terrorists better know that if the Democrats are elected they will be even tougher on them than Bush is.
Judging by the attacks the terrorists are making in an effort to impact the elections NEGATIVELY for Republicans, I guess they (the terrorists) early on decided they were better off with Democrats formulating policy and tactics against them than those in power now.
MSM is hoping that Bush will say he was WRONG! That's All they care about!
I see no mention of a change in the overall strategery.
"Bush To Consult Generals About Iraq Strategy "
There's a novel idea!!!!!!!
Bush To Consult Generals About Iraq Strategy
is this suppose to be the first time?
No bias here. They could have written more truthfully: "President Bush reminded the nation Friday that the situation in Iraq is tough." After all, he has said as much in countless statements during the past few years. Or they could have said: "The president agreed that the situation in Iraq is tough."
The use of the term "acknowledged" makes it seem as if he has been denying that things are tough, and only now is forced to "acknowledge" them under the withering cross-examination of the the media "watch dogs."
It suggests that Bush is weak and beleagured.
The bias is subtle, but it's there.
US President George Bush has said he will consult his generals on a change of tactics in Iraq.
He hinted a change of approach may be adopted to try to reduce levels of violence in the war-torn country.
October is on course to become the deadliest month for US forces there in nearly two years, with 74 troops killed so far.
More follows...
"if the Democrats are elected they will be even tougher on them than Bush is."
They'll smack 'em with their man bags.
The MSM knows that...but tries to put is past us!!
Both the terrorists and the MSM are pulling out all stops
to influence the election.
I'm sure that GW and Rummy called in MSNBC to get their advice and permission to discuss it with the Generals.
Tactics change constantly, and that is how we win wars.
I say razor wire around Baghdad, Saddam's territory, and let them at it.
