They found that water from a heavy rainstorm can reach spots underground where masses of rock are trying to move past each other but are stuck together by friction. The water can ease the friction, releasing pent-up tension so that the rocks jerk past each other and initiate tremors as deep as 4 kilometres underground

Water also adds weight.

Lol, ... I didn't realize you were from Maine. Not sure how long you have lived there - Bert & I? Bass? What a beautiful State.

We came to northern Maine in August of 1983 for Loring Air Force Base, which closed in Sept of 1994.  So sad. I really miss that base.

But we bought this house in Dec of 1984 and have lived here ever since.  Hubby died in 2003 and this house is really too big for me, but I love it and have no  plan to leave.
