Japanese Coast Guard Ship Rams Intruding Chinese Boat and Chases it Away
On Oct. 27, a Japanese Coast Guard ship is ramming and driving away a Chinese ship carrying members of "Treaty-Defending Committee" from Hong Kong, who tried to land on Daoyutai(aka Senkaku) Island, a disputed island in E. China Sea. Chinese came into an area Japan claims as its territorial waters, but turned back after sustaining heavy damage to their ship.

The description of the Japanese vessel as being from their 'Coast Guard' brings a question to my mind - is there a Japanese 'Coast Guard' as well as the 'Self-Defense Force'? Or is that just their naval component?
Guess it's time we (those of us on FR who don't know) started learning more about Japan's forces and capabilities...

The Japanese are definitely getting more aggressive. About time. If you want to see the Chinese Politburo come down with a collective case of diahrrea, let Japan announce it's building nukes. 1930s redux.

Wow... Are those orange thingies visible on the port side some kind of industrial-strength fenders, and if so, are there similar ones on starboard, or is there some serious hull-to-hull, metal-to-metal contact going on here...

The Japanese Coast Guard is not part of the Self Defense Forces, which are under the Japan Defense Agency:
Instead, the Coast Guard is part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation (MLIT). Here's a summary pdf from MLIT's website. (Give it a minute, it seems to load very slowly on my machine.)

For what it is worth, the Japanese Coast Guard also sank a North Korean spy ship a few years ago.

That would get the ChiComms attention! Someone from the Administration simply has to announce to China: "China, you have a problem with a nuclear N. Korea - take care of it. If you don't, we will permit Japan, S. Korea, and Tiawan to acquire nuclear weapons to stabilize East Asia."

Nor I. Remember when Germany sent their first troops out of the country, I think when they joined the forces in the Balkans? That one gave some folks pause, too.
I don't think we'd be seeing the same sort of nationalist fervor that led to the 1930s.

No it isn't. The "Japanese brand of aggression" ceased to exist over sixty (60) years ago.
The Japanese are rightfully repelling incursions into THEIR territory by an IMPERIAL and expansionist China. In the map below, look where Taiwan is located and note the strategic importance of Senkaku Island.
