Threat Matrix: November 2006

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

Jihadi websites and forums are studying and translating the texts of Western analysts who assess current counter-terrorism efforts.

Yep, loose lips sink ships - still a valid comment. But, by the same token, what's good for the goose - is exactly what we're doing with their texts, transmissions, videos and what we see via satellite. They have reason to fear, and today possibly more than ever before because they don't know how Mr. Rumsfeld's replacement will go after them. Eagerly would be my best guess.

Jihad maintains network in Bethlehem

Snip: Israeli security sources said the Iranian-sponsored Jihad has established a network in Bethlehem, adjacent to Jerusalem. The sources said Jihad used Bethlehem as a launching pad for attacks on Jewish commuters to Jerusalem.

Islamic cyber rogues threaten Vatican site

Snip: Muslim hackers allegedly supporting al-Qaeda have announced - for the second time in a month - a planned attack on the Vatican's official website. The assault has been planned by Islamist cyber-rogues for Thursday 9 November at 12 am Mecca time (10 am in Italy). The announcement was made on Wednesday through the creation of an ad hoc site where hackers can download programmes to start the internet attack. "The leadership of the electronic Jihad has decided to undertake a grand attack against the official Vatican site following the insults by the Pope against our Prophet," read a statement.

"With Allah's blessing, the attack will succeed thanks to the help of our brothers if we all attack simultaneously. We ask all our brothers to be present at the hour of the attack for a joint action, because they (Catholics) have struck our religion. They must be fought and deserve to be attacked and not only on their internet site," the statement continued.

Americans second

Snippets: Maybe not. A new poll of American Muslims paints a considerably less rosy picture of their assimilation.

One notable finding was that a large majority of respondents (214 out of 307) consider themselves to be not Americans first, but Muslims first and foremost. This mirrors similar findings in Western Europe, where 81 percent of British Muslims considered themselves Muslims first, and citizens of Great Britain second. Or perhaps third. They weren't asked to specify.

Nothing to concern ourselves about, right? Wrong. If the top brass of al Qaeda, Hamas and Hezbollah had taken the same poll, the responses would not have differed much. Those Muslim Americans polled overwhelmingly said that the U.S. government was at war with Islam, that it had advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks, but allowed the attacks to occur anyway, and that the U.S. was wrong to invade Afghanistan after 9/11.

It gets worse. A majority said violence against U.S. troops on American soil and against U.S. officials is justified "in retaliation for the American government's actions in the Muslim world," sentiments that, in another time and place, would have qualified as treasonous. Perhaps most disturbingly, a clear majority said Iran "should develop nuclear weapons," weapons that could one day be turned against the U.S. or its allies.

"Blood Sacrifice"
By Jacob Laksin
FrontPageMagazine.com | November 9, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "But while Gates can be absolved of involvement in Iran-Contra, his current views on Iran compel investigation. Especially noteworthy is a report on U.S. policy toward Iran that Gates co-authored in July of 2004 with Zbigniew Brzezinski, a onetime national security advisor to Jimmy Carter and, more recently, a foreign policy advisor to John Kerry’s presidential campaign.

Entitled Iran: Time for a New Approach, the report reads like a study in self-contradiction. Conceding that Iran has used “Iraqi instability for its own political gain,” the report concludes, “Iran nevertheless could play a potentially significant role in promoting a stable, pluralistic government in Baghdad.” Noting that “Iranian foreign policy remains captive of the regime’s official enshrinement of anti-American and anti-Israeli ideology,” the authors nonetheless attribute strained U.S.-Iranian relations to the Bush administration’s decision to include Iran in the “Axis of Evil,” lamenting that this “undercut several months of tacit cooperation between Washington and Tehran.” The undeniable fact of “Iranian incitement of virulent anti-Israeli sentiment” guides the authors to the non sequitur that “Arab-Israeli peace is central to eventually stemming the tide of extremism in the region.” From the fact that Iran has been a far from reliable negotiating partner, and that it has failed to “cooperate adequately with the [IAEA’s] investigation into its nuclear program,” the authors conclude that the answer is…more “constructive dialogue” on the nuclear issue. That Iran has been a perennial source of regional instability prompts the authors to recommend that it is in the “interests of the United States to engage selectively with Iran to promote regional stability.” And so on.

Central to the report is the fatalist assumption that the United States is powerless to prevent an Iranian nuclear program and that the only solution is to submit to “dialogue” with the mullahs. Cognate arguments have long been advanced by the so-called “realist” school of foreign policy, of which Gates is a member in good standing. In the 1990s, these arguments formed the ideological basis of the Clinton administration’s spectacularly misnamed “Agreed Framework” with North Korea. In exchange for giving up its nuclear program, the reasoning went, North Korea would receive diplomatic recognition and other concessions. Reality proved less obliging. Rather than live up to its end of the bargain, Pyongyang accelerated its program. Last month’s nuclear weapon test by North Korea was the logical conclusion of a decade of misguided policy.

Astonishingly, Gates regards the Clinton approach as the perfect model for dealing with Iran. At a July 2004 briefing on the Iran report, Gates explained the kind of discussions the U.S. should seek with Tehran: “In my view, my personal view, it's very similar to the kinds of discussions that have been going on with North Korea in the respect of more for more” Asked whether his report might be used for political purposes, Gates responded in the affirmative: “Oh, I have no doubt that various pieces of the report will be used by a variety of people,” he said. The danger is that one of those people is Gates himself – no longer a foreign policy theoretician laboring on the sidelines but, pending confirmation by the Senate, the man in charge of American defense."

Airports across India on high alert after Al-Qaida threat
Press Trust of India ^ | November 9, 2006

Posted on 11/09/2006 1:40:38 AM PST by HAL9000

NEW DELHI: A high alert has been sounded at all airports in the country, particularly those in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, following threats of a possible terror attack by Al-Qaida.
The security alert was issued on Thursday morning after the Director of Trichy Airport in Tamil Nadu received an anonymous letter warning of an attack by Al-Qaida at airports or on aircraft in South India.

The letter said about 10 Al-Qaida terrorists will break the security cordon and carry out attacks at airports. The airports that are placed on high alert are Chennai, Kochi, Trichy, Thiruvananthapuram and Coimbatore.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has taken up the matter seriously and held a series of meetings with officials of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, Home Ministry and CISF for reviewing the situation.

All necessary security measures have been put in place at all the airports to thwart any attack, official sources said here.

The measures included secondary ladder point check and thorough baggage check besides increased security at peripheral areas.

Violence In Oaxaca, Mexico, Forces Missionary Evacuation

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

OAXACA, MEXICO (ANS) -- Evangelical Covenant Church missionaries were forced to evacuate the city of Oaxaca in southern Mexico Friday, Nov. 3, following the escalation of conflict between Mexican federal police and protestors demanding the removal of Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz.

A story released by Evangelical News says that he is accused of rigging the 2004 election in his favor. At least eight people have died in the violence, most of them protestors who were shot by the police or armed gangs.
At least one short-term Covenant missionary left Oaxaca by airplane at noon Nov. 3 on the last flight to leave before the airport was officially closed.

Missionaries Cindy Hoover and Jo Ellen Reeves were driving north toward Puebla around 1 p.m. on Nov.3. Federal police had secured the highway leading north out of Oaxaca Wednesday evening. Short-term missionary Laura Rodriguez left Oaxaca by airplane at noon on that same today – the last flight to leave before the airport was officially closed.

The story went on to say that Leah Sander, daughter of Covenant missionaries Gary and Mary Lou Sander, has been studying in Oaxaca in a program with the University of California-Davis. She had already left Oaxaca with the study group two days ago and is reported safe.

“Jo Ellen and I had to quickly leave today as the ongoing civil unrest rapidly escalated and started to envelop our neighborhood,” Cindy Hoover wrote in an email to friends. “We are thankful to have been able to drive out (the road had been barricaded until yesterday evening) as that made it possible to bring my dog with me.

“As we were leaving, there were several fires going on in the outskirts of our neighborhood, unknown young men with masks roaming in our neighborhood with clubs, rocks, and Molotov cocktails, and riot police marching down the walkway on the edge of our neighborhood,” Hoover continued. “Helicopters were circling low over our houses. It was obvious we needed to leave quickly. We really didn’t expect this type of rapid escalation.”

Dan Wooding is an award winning British journalist now living in Southern California with his wife Norma. He is the founder and international director of ASSIST (Aid to Special Saints in Strategic Times) and the ASSIST News Service (ANS). He was, for ten years, a commentator, on the UPI Radio Network in Washington, DC. Wooding is the author of some 42 books, the latest of which is his autobiography, "From Tabloid to Truth", which is published by Theatron Books. Christian police official robbed of cash, gold ornaments

By Sheraz Khurram Khan
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service in Pakistan

KASUR, PAKISTAN (ANS) -- A Christian police official was robbed of cash, gold ornaments and other valuables on the night of October 25 in his village Clarka Abad in district Kasur, some 50 kilometers from the eastern city of Lahore, ANS has learnt.

Sub-Inspector Nelson John
According to a news release sent to ANS by the Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP) the Sub-Inspector of Police, Nelson John, was in his native village Clarca Abad when some 14 unidentified robbers subjected him to alleged torture and plundered 66000 Pakistan Rupees (US$ 1100), gold ornaments, wrist watches, 4 cameras and mobile phones from his home.

Currently deployed at the Police Line Qila Gujar Singh Lahore, Nelson, a coach in the Police Sport School is said to be serving the Police department for 19 years.

The release said he was walking near his village home when some 14 armed men allegedly tortured him and forcibly entered his home.

“………..They also took my weapons with them. They took my brothers Anjum Sohail, 28, Azeem, 17, and me with them at gun point to a canal, outside the village. They tied us with ropes and fled away”, the SLMP quoted Nelson as saying.

The news release went on to say that the robbers hurled death threat to Nelson in case he informed the police.

Undeterred by the threat on his life, Nelson, the release said, phoned the police who, it said arrived within 20 minutes.

“The Police arranged a local detector at about 5:00 next morning. The detector followed the foot steps of the robbers and pointed at farmhouse of one Mohammad Hanif of the neighboring village.” it said.

“Nelson John, later, arranged sniffer dogs from army to detect the robbers; the dogs also guided the police to Mohammad Hanif’s house. Police arrested Mohammad Hanif and Mohammad Sikander in suspicion. Further investigation is underway”, it added.

The ministry said it in its news release that Nelson alleged that local Nazim was backing the culprits.

However, it said that Nelson expressed optimism that his being a police official the local police would conduct fair probe into the case and bring the culprits to book.

“Although, the robbers have looted all my savings but I do believe in living God, He will compensate me, the SLMP quoted Nelson as saying.
