Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

It'll be interesting to see if the description stands - or if some politically correct editor 'fixes' the info.

Iraqi Police Officials Linked to Mass Abduction
Washington Post ^ | 11-14-06 | Sudarsan Raghavan

Posted on 11/14/2006 4:02:43 PM PST by dogbyte12

BAGHDAD, Nov. 14 -- Armed men in Iraqi police uniforms and driving police vehicles kidnapped as many as 150 people from a government agency on Tuesday, and several senior police commanders were arrested in connection with the abductions, Iraqi officials said today.

The abductions were a well-orchestrated reminder of how challenging basic security remains in Iraq at a time when U.S. officials are pressing the local government to assert more control

Precise figures on how many people were kidnapped and how many were later released were hard to come by. The prime minister's office said more than 50 people were kidnapped and 20 later released. The Interior Ministry said 30 people were kidnapped and the Ministry of Higher Education said it was as many as 150 employees and visitors who were abducted.

ACLU Push and Democrats Plan To Block NSA Legislation
Stop The ACLU ^ | 14-Nov-06 | John Stephenson

Posted on 11/14/2006 4:16:40 PM PST by Jay777

The ACLU, still fighting the NSA program in court, calls upon Congress to block legislation for the NSA program.

In Washington, the ACLU is urging Congress to live up to its constitutional responsibility to provide checks and balances to the executive and judicial branches, de-fund the illegal spying program and undertake a thorough investigation into the NSA warrantless eavesdropping. Between its return on November 13 and its adjournment, the 109th Congress may vote on key issues such as a potential $15 billion give-away to telephone companies which would immunize companies from any liability for participating in the NSA spying program. President Bush has also made clear his intention to push through legislation legitimizing the illegal NSA spying program during the "lame-duck" Congressional session.
The ACLU doesn't have much to worry about with the "lame-duck Congress. It looks like Democrats have every intention of blocking the NSA legisilation.

Far Left Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) writes today at the Huffington Post that democrats will go ahead and block terrorist surveillance methods:

Turkey: Life Sentence Requested For Main Suspect In 2003 Istanbul Bombings

Istanbul, 14 Nov. (AKI) - Turkish prosecutors have asked for a life prison sentence for a man they describe as a member of al-Qaeda and the mastermind of a series of bombings in Istanbul in November 2003 which killed 57 people and injured over 400. Syrian-born Louai Sakka is on trial along with 71 other suspects, 31 one of whom are in custody.

The attacks took place on two days: on 15 November two trucks packed with explosives slammed into two Jewish synagogues in Istanbul killing 27 people; on 20 November sucide bombers detonated explosives they were carrying in front of a HSBC banking group building and at the British consulate, killing in total 30 people.

Sakka was captured in 2005 while he was allegedly preparing a bomb attack on Israeli cruise ships docking at the Turkish coastal resort of Antalya in 2005.

New Figure Emerges In Spain Train Bombings

Madrid, 13 Nov. (AKI) - Spanish police say they have identified a Moroccan man who first claimed responsibility for the deadly 11 March 2004 bomb attacks on commuter trains in Spain's capital, Madrid, which killed 191 people and injured over 1,000, Spanish daily El Pais reported. The paper named the man as Mohammed Oulad Akcha. But judge Juan Del Olmo, who is has led the investigation into the bombings, has so far ruled as inadmissible the evidence against Oulad Akcha - supplied by a single female witness under police protection.

Oulad Akcha read a message on video claiming responsibility for the Madrid train attacks. Declaring himself to be al-Qaeda's spokesman in Europe, he appeared in the video against the backdrop of a green banner emblazoned with a slogan that read in Arabic: "There is no other God than Allah and Mohammed is his prophet." Police recovered the video wrapped in a glove inside a rubbish bin outside the Grand Mosque, close to Madrid's M-30 ringroad.

Exiled Muslim cleric preaching to Britons over the Internet

LONDON (AFP) - An exiled Islamic cleric is still preaching support for terrorism within Britain by using pseudonyms over the Internet, the BBC reported.

The radical Syrian-born preacher Omar Bakri Mohammed broadcasts online most evenings, one of which praised the four Islamist suicide bombers who killed 52 commuters on London's transport network on July 7, 2005, according to the broadcaster.

"How can you condemn those great men -- it's not something so bad, something so good. Something so good to be involved in," Mohammed allegedly said, referring to the four men.

The BBC confirmed the voice of the broadcaster as Mohammed through a voice recognition expert.

Hasba Bill sets base for future mullah rule: HRCP
Wednesday, November 15, 2006

LAHORE: The Hasba Bill allows the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal government in the NWFP to put in place a powerful network that will aid the religious parties’ alliance in future elections, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan warned in a press release on Tuesday.

The HRCP believes the bill “has nothing to do with Islam”, and “amounts to a clever manoeuvre to create grassroots networks of mullahs” that could help the MMA win future elections in the NWFP.

Two Pakistanis held with bombs

JALALABAD: Security forces in Afghanistan Tuesday detained two Pakistani nationals with homemade bombs on a road heading towards the Pakistani border, police said. The men were captured in Marko, a small town in Nangarhar, provincial police spokesman Ghafoor Khan said.

The bombs were made of explosives placed in pressure cookers, he said, adding that police helped by foreign troops were working to dismantle the devices. He did not say what group the men were linked with, but Taliban militants have used similar devices even more than five years after US-led forces began ousting their movement. afp

IAEA asks Pakistan to develop N-database

MANIPAL: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has asked Pakistan to develop a nuclear database for power reactors and contribute to the IAEA information base.

“Since Pakistan has nuclear power reactors and will soon be acquiring another six from China, it is important that Pakistan takes the initiative to evolve its nuclear data to keep at par with its neighbour India and contribute to the world body’s website,” Dr Alan Nichols, head of the IAEA nuclear data section, said at a two-day meeting on “atomic and nuclear data for next generation medicine and technologies” organised by the UNESCO peace chair at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, India, on Tuesday.

Comcast backs away from Arab net
Mon., Nov. 13, 2006

Al-Jazeera Intl. has all but conceded defeat in its effort to gain U.S. distribution in time for its worldwide launch Wednesday.

Execs at the nascent English-language offshoot of the Arab broadcaster said Comcast Communications pulled the plug on talks Monday on a deal the net considered essential to gaining a beachhead in the U.S.

The Associated Press last week reported Comcast had pulled out of talks but, in fact, negotiations continued, with Comcast offering to roll out the channel regionally. Comcast is the dominant operator in the Detroit area, which has one of the nation's largest Arab-American populations.

But AJI execs were holding out for a full rollout across all of Comcast's 12.1 million digital subscribers (Comcast has 24 million digital and analog subs), and they believed a deal was imminent.

"We thought we were just awaiting signatures. We feel like we've been led down the garden path. It's a setback for us in the States, but I don't want this to overshadow the fact we've had phenomenal figures in the rest of the world," said one AJI employee who insisted on anonymity.
