Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

Speaking of roses, I have roses, impatiens, pansies and marigolds that continue to bloom. It is somewhat unusual but wonderful! I just took in some more luscious yellow roses. They are so fragrant this year.

"Zawahiri used madrassa to train bombers: Pak"
Press Trust of India

Islamabad, November 1, 2006|19:18 IST

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A religious school destroyed in an army air raid in Bajaur tribal area was frequented by Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri who used it to train suicide bombers, Pakistani officials have said.

The facility, known as Maulvi Liaquat's madrassa, was used for imparting training to new recruits with second and third-tier leadership of Al-Qaeda, by al-Zawahiri and his associates Abu Obaida al-Misri and Abu Farrah Libbi, top security officials told a briefing on Tuesday.

They displayed to media stills and videos of the early morning training sessions at the destroyed seminary with participants from Swat, Dir, Bajaur and even Afghanistan.

The photos taken through infrared camera showed people aged between 20 to 30 carrying out exercises with no weapons.

"No weapon or arms were shown as being used for training, as tactics of terrorists have been changed and they prepare suicide bombers," local daily The News today quoted a Pakistani official as saying.

The facility was frequently visited by al-Zawahiri, Libbi, al-Misri and others to prepare a new lot of foot soldiers as Al-Qaeda is reportedly running short of them."

Activist gets ASIO papers (American deported from Australia as 'security risk')
news.com.au ^ | 3rd November 2006

Posted on 11/02/2006 5:52:00 PM PST by naturalman1975

AN American peace activist deported from Australia last year and two detained Iraqi asylum seekers have been granted access to ASIO documents that deemed them security risks.

Peace activist Scott Parkin was classified a national security risk while on holiday in Australia last September and was deported.

Iraqi asylum seekers Mohammad Sagar and Muhammad Faisal, who have been detained for more than five years, also received adverse security assessments from ASIO.

The three men applied to the Federal Court for access to the ASIO documents after the federal Government refused to release them.

Justice Ross Sundberg today granted them access to the assessments to prepare for a case that will challenge the ASIO decision deeming them security risks.

In his judgment, Justice Sundberg said he accepted the three men's argument that they needed access to the ASIO documents for their case to prove they were not national security risks.

By The Associated Press / Fox 11

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- An explosive device has gone off at Foothills Mall on Tucsons northwest side this evening.

Authorities with Northwest Fire and the Pima County Sheriffs Department tell KMSB-TV it exploded shortly after six p.m. in a trash can outside the Barnes and Noble bookstore.

One eyewitness described it as an "acid bomb" but there was no immediate confirmation of exactly what type of explosive.

A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriffs Department said it was "some sort of an acid-type device which did explode."

The bookstore has been evacuated and the southeast corner of the parking area at the mall cordoned off.

There are no initial reports of injuries.

It may be a prank, but bombs of any type (big or small) going off in a mall is not a good deal.
