Fear of Taxes Could Save Burns in Montana
Real Clear Politics ^ | November 02, 2006 | Robert Novak

Just two weeks ago, Republican Sen. Conrad Burns appeared dead in trying for a fourth term. Polls gave his Democratic opponent, State Sen. Jon Tester, a double-digit lead, and that caused party leaders in Washington to write off Burns. But less than a week before the election, Burns has closed to within a few percentage points of Tester. The reason can be found in this Burns television ad: "Jon Tester...raised taxes on more than 16,000 small businesses....Tester supports a $2,000 tax increase on families. Tester's a politician and a taxer who'll say anything to get elected."

...Burns is pounding Tester as a taxer too liberal for Montana....Montana for the last half century has been red in presidential and blue in senatorial elections. Since 1952, Lyndon Johnson in '64 and Bill Clinton '92 are the only Democrats to carry the state for president. In that same period, only one Republican from Montana was elected to the Senate: Conrad Burns. Regarded here as a potential accident whenever he opens his mouth, he barely survived two of his three elections.

Among Republican senators, only Rick Santorum in Pennsylvania was viewed by the party's high command as more vulnerable than the 71-year-old Burns as this campaign cycle began....Republican strategists in Washington thought Burns was gone and wanted him to drop his candidacy. But Burns had one asset: Jon Tester, the surprise Democratic primary winner. The consensus here is that Tester is the only possible Democrat who could lose to Burns.

...this election now looks too close to call -- thanks to fear of taxes. Tester has lashed back to claim, inaccurately, that Burns advocates a 23 percent national sales tax on top of income taxes. The tax issue, though not emphasized by either party nationwide, is mitigating damage to the Republican Party.

THIS IS THE WAY TO CAMPAIGN -- BY EMPHASIZING YOUR STRONG POINTS -- ESPECIALLY WHEN THE OPPOSITION IS DRAMATICALLY WEAK ON THEM.

Wait a second here. You mean if the you campaign on conservative principles, gulp, you could win. Amazing. In a campaign, when you don't define yourself, you leave the door open for the opposition. Earth to Republicans, they are liberals, define them as such. Taxes are only the start.

The Dems don't even have to raise taxes if they win. If they do nothing the Bush tax cuts die on their own.

    Negative Reporting

Bad news is always bigger news than good news. But a study by the Business and Media Institute says when it comes to the economy, broadcast network news stories are overwhelmingly and intentionally negative.

The year-long study of evening news programs revealed more than twice as many negative economic stories as positive — and the negative stories were in full -length reports — while the positive were in shorter forms. The study says the "CBS Evening News" went negative on the economy in 80 percent of its reports — the highest percentage among the three networks. [see http://www.businessandmedia.org ]

Heard a Dem on the local radio in Columbus, OH. William Conner (D-OH7) talked about rolling back both the Bush AND Reagan tax cuts to generate $800,000,000,000 in extra tax revenues per year. Then the utter moron said that wouldn't hurt the economy because the taxes would only affect the rich. I just about fell over.

I then thought, well, maybe I misheard. So I went to his website and found this: http://connerforus.com/Economic%20Policy.htm Yup, he wants a return to up to 70% tax rates. Guess he's too stupid to understand the economic implications. Hey, moron, rich people don't pay taxes, they pass them on to their businesses and consumers. Can you say stagflation? Guess you're too stupid to remember the 70s under Carter. /spit

Seriously, how can ANYONE be that damn STUPID?

Voters in Ohio's 7th district, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE vote against this insane cash grab by voting (R)!!!

I wish this was coming from anybody besides robert no-facts.
A) he is a registered Democrat
B) he means us harm. Believe it remember this bum could have stopped the Plame Bull shiite ANYTIME he wanted
C) he is the only man in America whose political predictions are more wrong than little Dick Morris' picks
D) The idea of the msm calling him a conservative is about the same as calling Tokyo Rose an American disc jockey because she played American music.

But I'll take it and hope and pray this is the single thing that old bastard gets right this cycle.

I do not understand why any Democrat who has come out against the "Bush Tax Cuts" is not being whalloped by commercials that point out that, if they have that way, taxes will be raised on working families by an average of $2000.00. It's true, and it's electoral Kryptonite to the Democrats.

Maybe the Republicans will get around to playing that card in 2008.
