Smart As You, Johnny
New York Sun ^ | 11/2/06 | Larry Schweikart (LS)

Senator Kerry's comments about uneducated people being "stuck" in Iraq — essentially calling the men and women of the American military stupid — is one of the political blunders of the age. Seldom does a candidate single-handedly sink his party once, let alone twice, though William Jennings Bryan came close. Mr. Kerry may have done so.

Worse, it's simply not right to promote the idea that soldiers are dumb or even undereducated. New York Times reporter Chris Hedges asserted, "poor kids from Mississippi … who could not get a decent job … joined the Army because it was all we offered them." In reality, however, the American military — yes, even the foot soldiers — is the most educated in history and better educated than the American public on average. Annually, thousands of top honor students take the military entrance exams. The recruitment test, which all inductees must pass, includes questions that many Ph.D.s would miss, and I would gladly hold a contest pitting any 10 American Army soldiers, randomly selected, against any 10 public school teachers on a standardized test.

In short, to look at those who currently serve in harm's way and see the poor, the stupid, the brutal, and the baffled is to apply a liberal, aristocratic lens more appropriate to 19th-century Prussia than to 21st-century America

We don't do cannon fodder anymore.

The piece is brilliant LS

"Gang, this is my first truly national editorial. Thanks to the Sun for running it. This WILL affect the election, and is good for 1-2% at the polls."

That is a fine op-ed. Congratulations.

As to affecting the election by 1%-2%, I think you wildly overestimate the reach of the New York Sun. If every editorial printed every day in the year, in all publications, had the ability to affect national events by 1%-2% we would have to dramatically revise the methodology of computing percentages.

That was very good.
I'll add that 100% of Air Force recruits have at least a HS diploma. They won't take you if you don't (and a GED doesn't count)!

Way to go!

What the US Army recruiting poster under "President" Kerry would look like:

Our brave warriors n Irak respond to Jon Carry"

Kerry is no different re his hatred of a strong America and our warriors than 99.9% of the rats in congress. Every rat running for election should have to face a copy of this banner everytime they show their treasonous faces. Pelosi, Murtha, Clintoon, Boxer, Kennedy, Durbin, Levin, Rangle, Reid and other rats in congress hate our military and a strong America. Just look at their voting records the past two years as President Bush pointed out this week.

Vote against all traitors this election day. Support our troops and their CIC, President Bush.
