Kerry's Remark: Right either way

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

Republicans evidenced their election desperation by braying about an offhand comment that Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., made at a California college rally.

"Education" Kerry said "-- if you make the most of it and you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Was Kerry making fun of the president, or warning students against the pitfalls awaiting the undereducated in general?

It doesn't matter. Kerry was right either way.

Kerry wasn't saying -- regardless of the Republican spin -- that our troops are stupid.

Kerry's intended point was obvious. President Bush didn't do his homework before he ordered the invasion. He didn't study the intricacies of Mideast religion, culture, politics and tribalism. He wasn't smart about it and we are stuck in Iraq.

Although there are plenty of well-educated people in our armed forces -- Kerry was one of them -- military service has long been an opportunity employer for those with less education and fewer skills than they need to work in the private sector. Indeed, the military sells itself as a place to garner skills and to help pay for higher education.

And wars, including this one, are often fought by those less privileged -- albeit no less smart -- than the sons and daughters of those who lead us into them.

Apologies? Sure, from the cut-and-run Democratic candidates who've cancelled appearances with Kerry.

I love what Karl Rove said to Ann Compton:

Rove: Insulting Military Is a Kerry 'Habit'
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=2621997&page=1

ROVE [replying to Ann Compton]: ... he ought to apologize. Why can he not bring himself to say "You know what? I apologize to America's fighting men and women who took umbrage at my comments." He can't bring himself to do it. In fact, what he does is he suggests that anyone who took umbrage at my remarks is bad. He's attacked people who took his remark as an attack on the military. But wait a minute. The military took his remark as an attack on the military. He ought to simply apologize. Why can he not bring himself to say, "'I'm sorry. I made a mistake. I'm sorry I insulted you. I didn't mean to do it. Will you please accept my apology and move on?" But he can't bring himself to say it.

"Education-- if you make the most of it and you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you wind up where you can't even tell a joke without screwing up and having to fall all over yourself not apologizing then apologizing for sounding like the fool you are.

And then having every liberal hack in the entire country come running to your defense because you are such a pathetic, pompous, patronizing, patrician, picayune, pissant.

Publications like P.I and the Times & Boston Globe all come from the same pond scum bateria- they never apologize for using the N word, the K word or any other racial slurs, nor do they apologize for insulting the GOP and anyone associated with the GOP even the military. The day hard print publications liek them fizzle is the day America celebrates the death of terror coddling extremist garbage media-

Yes, per Merriam-Webster online:
troop
1 a : a group of soldiers
b : a cavalry unit corresponding to an infantry company
c plural : ARMED FORCES, SOLDIERS
2 : a collection of people or things : CREW 2
3 : a flock of mammals or birds
4 : the basic organizational unit of Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts under an adult leader

Scrappleface takes on the same point:

After Botched Apology Kerry Blames Republicans
by Scott Ott
http://www.scrappleface.com/?p=2379
(2006-11-01) — During Sen. John Kerry’s most recent hourly news conference, the former Democrat presidential nominee said he was sorry for what he called “a botched apology” posted to his website earlier in the day, that was spurred by his “botched joke” on Monday.

The text of his apology reads, in part…

“As a combat veteran, I want to make it clear to anyone in uniform and to their loved ones: my poorly stated joke at a rally was not about, and never intended to refer to any troop.

I sincerely regret that my words were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform, and I personally apologize to any service member, family member, or American who was offended.“

“In the course of my botched apology,” the senator said this evening, “I inadvertently used the word ‘troop’ to refer to a single individual. I also used the word ‘imply’ when I should have used ‘infer’, and I said that I ‘personally apologize’ to anyone who was offended, when in fact, I simply posted a few sentences on the website, addressed to no one in particular.”

“Come to think of it,” he added, “my apology didn’t admit wrong doing, express regret for my actions or offer to make things right. I really just blamed the troops for misunderstanding my joke. So, perhaps ‘apology’ was not the precise term for it.”

Sen. Kerry said his poorly-worded apology, however, does reinforce the premise of his original ‘botched joke’ about bad students being sent to war, since he is a combat veteran.

“The ultimate message of my failed apology,” he said, “is that the Republicans will do anything to divert attention from the quagmire in Iraq, even if it means letting a Democrat Senator scuttle his party’s political strategy on the eve of national elections.”

He also put up a great video, linked here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfQnJqkAydM
"Because of Iraq II"
My favorite line in it: "Because of Iraq, you've had to listen to *this woman*", then he puts up a photo of Cindy Sheehan.
Another great line, "Because of Iraq, the land of opportunity (photo of White House) has become the land of broken dreams," followed by a photo of John Kerry with his head facing the ground.

Ditto your comments. He's hilarious.

When I read truth, or satire from a truthful heart, it is so much more piercing and graspable than when reading something from a skewed mind, such as anything Ted Kennedy, Jon Carry, Bubba J. Clinton, etc., says or writes.

What? This editorial board, like all moonbat liberals, get their talking points from the media/academia wobble heads, the latter of which has no clue what it takes to hold a private sector job. Good grief.

"...Republican Party would rather talk about anything but their failed security policy."

What part has failed? I feel secure. We have not had an attack on American soil since 9/11. Many plots have been foiled. We are starting to shore up the borders. We have killed or captured thousands of terrorists who would like to destroy us. Where has W failed? I would like Kerry to explain this.
