K-rations were ok when you were hungry.

I remember one December day, me and a bunch of other guys got detailed to "road guide" duty during a field exercise in Germany. I was told to stand at an intersection and point Army trucks in a certain direction. We got loaded in a five-quarter ton truck, I had the next to last station, the five-quarter no sooner got to the Autobahn exit than the convoy we were to guide showed up, within my sight. The first truck, a huge Pershing Missile Erector/Launcher with a training round arrived, ignored me completely and turned in the right direction. We trailed the convoy, a Pershing Missile Firing Battery from another battalion, picking up all the other road guides about as quick as we had emplaced them.

The NCOIC, probably an E4 or E5 had the bright idea of getting some real food. We found a Gasthaus in the tiny nearby hamlet of Rimbach (iirc), parked the 5/4 off the main road, and entered in steel pots and with rifles at sling arms. Grandma peeked at us from the kitchen and retreated. A minute later, a tall thin stately gentleman approached our table, came to attention, clicked his heals and saluted smartly. "Ich war auch Soladat. Beim Luftwaffe in Geichenland." He was a Luftwaffe rocket troop in Greece during the past unpleasantness and the convoy of missile equipment brought back fond memories of his youth.

He set grandma to whipping Schnitzel, Spazle, Salad and Bier. We had a very gratifying lunch and filling lunch, best meal in over a week. We crawled back into our Battery area about two O'clock and were greeted by a very suspicious little captian from headquarters battery. He eyed us sharply, "He held lunch for you guys." He watched us like a hawk as we finished every morsel of K-rations warmed in boiling water. (At least they still had Lucky Strikes in those days.)

MRE don't have Luckys, which really can't suck enough.
