Iraq urges calm ahead of Saddam verdict

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer 38 minutes ago

SNIP

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's prime minister on Saturday urged his countrymen to accept the impending verdict against Saddam Hussein without violence, then in the next breath declared the former dictator must get "what he deserves" with the decision that could send him to the gallows.

Wonder what brought that about?
Maybe he was worried about his own neck.

Good point. Perhaps he made that statement to help him in the appeal.

Probably so...
But who knows?

I'm sure there's more to this, especially, after Saddam left the courtroom yelling at the judge.
I wouldn't think he'd have a change of heart THAT quick.

I have heard them say there has been some violence.

We've heard a couple of explosions. But only Sadr City has people all over the streets. (Waving stupid Mookie Sadr's picture.)

Celebratory gunfire has quieted down for now.

Well, I'm really happy you like it, considering all your hard work on our behalf! Feel free to share it with your Baghdad buddies.

If you ever find yourself in the Bay Area, or if I find myself in Iraq, I owe you a drink!

Thanks for the update! Its better to hear it from the front lines than from the news that is foaming at the mouth at wanting Iraq to turn violent over this.

Oh, the media has already started their crap. I just posted on a thread that has a headline saying Shiites are happy, Sunnis are not.

What a LIE!! Sunnis are every bit as happy, save for the few who were in Saddam's favor.

It can only help, even if he is doing it only to help his own appeal (probably). If the people of his hometown, Anbar province, and the Sunnis in general heed the statement, then Iraq will be more peaceful.

This isn't the top story on all of the Google News pages, Argentina for example, where it is near the bottom.

Yeah the media template is all Sunnis support Saddam 100%. It makes for a simpler story line for them.

12. Well we're all stuck on stupid tonight
They're stupid, no question. But apologizing for Saddam is stupid too. The man murdered people. He's guilty. I don't like the death penalty, but that's the sentence. End of story. I don't know why DUers go to the mat for people like Saddam Hussein.

15. True...especially in the way they exonerate Bush.
That was my main intent in posting...to show how the proud little freeps bristle at the suggestion that our beloved leader might have a few things to answer for as well. I don't think I've seen any "Saddam support" sentiment here.

Why post cr@p comparing Bush to Saddam when you know the right just uses it to inflame their base?

16. I'll just use hide thread
I used all in the sense of both sites, not any given person. There are people who go out of their way to defend Saddam and the charges against him, and it just seems stupid to me. Let's give them ammunition to prove we're exactly what they say we are, 2 days before an election. Over Saddam Hussein. Just stupid. But whatever - like I said - I'll just use hide thread. It's easier that way.

Saddam took to religion long before he was pulled from his hole. He was constructing the mother of all mosques- whose minarets looked like scud missiles. In it he put a Koran written using his own blood as ink, so the story goes.

I had been reading his speeches before 9/11 and they were long rambling screeds full of religious imagery- he had determined after the Gulf War that he needed a group more reliable than his fellow Iraqis so he began cultivating islamists rather than fighting them so much. The chenge in his rhetoric after he made the deal with al Qaeda was notable.
