hey... they were getting ready to celebrate a wedding.
Definitely planning to smuggle it south. The .38 Super is fairly common in Mexico. Great cartridge IMO.
Go to any gun range and Ill bet the guys there have that many rounds in their pick ups. The ATF sucks.
bill's always right, right?

I assume they were illegal aliens otherwise I don't see how this could possibly be illegal.
.38 Super? I think that they were gearing up for an IPSC match...
Yep, this ammo was to be used on our border agents, that was my first thought.
Nah, .38 Super is common and popular in Mexico where ownership of .45's is illegal (their gun laws are as weird as any) It's been that way for decades.
Link does not work.
Right you are. The .38 Super is used widely in Mexico, and very little elsewhere.
The reason is because of Mexico's peculiar firearms laws. Civilians are not allowed to own any firearms in a caliber that has ever been used by any nation's military. This is to prevent importation of military surplus rifles and thus make it harder to mount a revolution.
Mexicans are also not allowed to own any pistol in a caliber greater than .38/9mm. So, the .38 Super is the most powerful pistol for which you can get a Mexican permit. In fact, if I recall correctly, the caliber was developed specifically to get around these two restrictions for the legitimate Mexican market.
Of course there are many illegal guns down there too, which is why they were planning to smuggle the 9mm and .45 stuff. But I would say any large purchase of .38 Super by a Mexican national is prima facie evidence of an intent to smuggle.

Soon the headlines will read:
"Our brave ATF attacked and killed 4 families of Right-Wing gun nut terrorists. They are making Amerika safer!"
All the gov't terror organizations will have a field day with the dems in power. How soon will it be before the knock comes to your door for your hunting rifle, semi-auto pistol, or even black power rifle.
The .38 Super was Colt's contribution in the search for a more powerful handgun during the 20's and 30's. There was a bit of an arms race between mobile gangsters like Dillinger and law enforcement, plust the addition of needing to overcome car bodies in shootouts. Smith and Wesson came up with the .357 Magnum, and Colt developed the Super to work in their 1911. Unfortunately for Colt the round was headspaced incorrectly in early guns and did not have the accuracy of the .357 out of a revolver.
The Super is really a great round, and loaded to near .357 velocities is a good stopper. Plus out of a 1911 the recoil is mild compared to a .357, except the big N frames.
What an unspeakably bad law.
I fear that you are far to optimistic about the Democrats behavior it won't just be amensty the rats will give citizenship to the illegals that way they can all vote for the Dems in the next election . Jorge Bush will gladly sign it into law cause the GOP wants to "work in a bipartisan fashion with the Democrats".
You're probably right on Horhay Bush ,,, BTW wouldn't .357 MAXimum be legal in Mex as it is actually .38 cal?
