Couple from California face federal charges for alleged airborne antics
ANDREA WEIGL
(Raleigh) News & Observer

RALEIGH - A California couple whose in-flight friskiness on the way to Raleigh was a bit much for other passengers are facing federal charges for harassing the flight attendant who asked them to stop.

Carl Warren Persing and Dawn Elizabeth Sewell are scheduled to go to trial Dec. 11 at the federal courthouse in Wilmington for their behavior during a Sept. 15 flight.

The indictment states that "the defendants repeatedly engaged in overt sexual activity in the cabin of the plane to such an extent that the flight attendant had to direct them to stop."

But Persing and Sewell wouldn't halt their public displays of affection, and Persing threatened the flight attendant who made the request and refused to serve them alcohol, according to the court records.

Efforts to reach Persing, of Lakewood, Calif., and Sewell, of Huntington Beach, Calif., were unsuccessful.

Their defense lawyers did not return messages Monday.

It is unclear how often disruptive passengers are charged with crimes. The Federal Aviation Administration tracks only incidents involving unruly passengers that are reported by the flight crew and are not referred to law enforcement. There were 79 incidents this year as of Sept. 20 -- in comparison to last year's total of 203.

FBI special agent Michael Sutton wrote in an affidavit that Persing and Sewell were on a Southwest Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Raleigh with a stop in Phoenix. On the first trip, Persing and Sewell sat in separate rows, and Persing was served one alcoholic drink. From Phoenix to Raleigh, the pair sat next to each other.

While in the plane on the ground in Phoenix, the couple were kissing, embracing and "acting in a manner that made other passengers uncomfortable," Sutton wrote in his affidavit.

"Persing was observed nuzzling or kissing Sewell on the neck, and around the collarbone in the vicinity of her breast," Sutton wrote. Persing was also observed with his face pressed against Sewell's lower body.

At first, the couple complied with a request from a flight attendant to stop their behavior. But they soon resumed during the flight.

When asked again, according to Sutton's affidavit, Persing told the flight attendant: "I'm going to give you one warning to get out of my face."

Things deteriorated from there, according to Sutton's affidavit: The flight attendant refused to serve them alcohol. Persing called the flight attendant "a punk." Persing kept asking for alcohol.

Sewell told the flight attendants that she worked for a lawyer and it was illegal not to serve alcohol to them. The flight attendant told them to stop asking for alcohol.

Persing said, "You and I are gonna have some serious confrontation when we get off this plane."

When the couple got off the plane in Raleigh, law enforcement officials were waiting.

"But it is illegal to have hard sharp objects on planes."

Well, it's ok in this case. These two aren't too sharp.

I would bet [insert large dollar figure] that these folks are committed Democrats who seldom vote, but go to all the right parties. IT's all about them.

I doubt it, the article says its a man and woman.

What in the heck is wrong with people?

It's the entitlement mentality. They thought they were entitled to behave however they wish on the airplane. They thought they were entitled to be served drinks. They thought they were entitled to treat the flight attendant like a subordinate. Unfortunately, these kind of folks are becoming all too prevalent. Hardly a day goes by when I don't encounter someone with an attitude like this.....

It's all a misunderstanding. With the roar of the engines in their ears, they misheard the fight attendent when he asked, "Peanuts?"

I hope the folks on the plane pay as much attention to potential terrorists as they do to a couple making out.

People have this fantasy of making love on a plane... only place they can do it is in the bathroom. So a couple has to figure how to get there without being noticed. Hopefully the roar of the engines will shield the noise they would make during sex. The thrill lies in the danger of being caught. Which is why the Mile High Club has a pretty exclusive membership.

This may be the same Mr. Persing, who is an admitted alcoholic, and used to be in the Navy for a brief period of time, and was in trouble til the end:

Well, Well, Well I can not believe it. I hope to find some old shipmates. I served the USS England from 1988 to 91, and had a hell of a time. We did two westpacs to the gulf. It was the liberty ports that made it worth the time. I'm looking for pictures that can bring back all the good times that we had. I was a snipe in the #2 engineroom and had great times. The crew was the best, a little crazy but fun. I can say that the navy did turn me into a man, and contributed to my alcoholism and divorce. I'm looking forward to the ships reunion and need to get the time and date. Whats up Doug Corley, Mike Butler, Joe Knouse, Sean Rancourt all you crazy f***s. How the hell are you all. Well, All you people that served on the USS England are real men that served on a ship that was one of a kind. God Bless you all.

Your s**tmate MM3 Persing from two engineroom. 1988 to 91

And if your out there Chief Hatchel, I'll never forget the walk down the pier and the words exchanged....... Nice try in writing me up on my last day in the navy. Thank God for my friend like LTJG Bushnell.

Keep in Touch

"Sewell told the flight attendants that she worked for a lawyer and it was illegal not to serve alcohol to them."

LMAO - "I work for a lawyer, and boy, are YOU going to get into trouble!"

What a nice Catch 22 for a lawyer. It's illegal to not serve them alcohol (???) but if she did and they went over their limit and got in a car accident and killed someone, guess who'd be the first to get sued?

Can you say *job security*?

Not that it has anything to do with the story, but the way the article was written leads me to believe that the flight attendant was male. Being male, this may have caused greater aggression from the unruly passengers.

1. Note that the article never identifies the sex of the flight attendant, never refers to the flight attendant as he, she, him, her, etc.

2. The passenger called the flight attendant "a punk," normally an insult used for men (I can think of better things to call females).

3. The challenge to fight, seems like it would be more likely to have occurred if the flight attendant was male.

I don't know.

Some couple stopped outside our front window once and were making out in the car. I didn't want my young children to see this but knew that if I asked this couple to grow up and stop it or something, they'd sneer at me. So I leaned over to the window and shouted *Can I sell tickets?* The look on the woman's face was priceless. She just stiffened right up, pursed her lips, and stared straight ahead while Mr. Loverboy pulled away. Priceless.

Yes, if they both do it standing up or one partner reclines and the other standsm, its possible. You'd be amazed at human ingenuity in small spaces.

what is the problem with being served a drink on a plane and it not being counted in some sercret room somewhere by a bunch of folks with nothing else to do. A long time ago traveling was fun. Now it is a pain in the ass and everyone wants to mess it up!!!!!!! have fun flying under the new rules...I don't and once upon a time I flew 250000 miles a years...now as few as I have to!!!!!!!
All flight personels are Hitlers today...screw you in a minute...no way to enjoy any flights any more!!!
