Bullet found in doorway!!

LIVE ammunition has been found lying in the doorway of a busy high street shop.

The .22 calibre short round bullet was found at the entrance of the 99p Stores in Walthamstow High Street on Wednesday morning, November 1.

[LETHAL: The .22 calibre bullet found in Walthamstow High Street on a market day morning (D6W1001)]

Haroon Khan, who has a firearms licence and is a member of a local gun club, was alarmed to discover live ammunition in a Walthamstow doorway.

The bullet, of Swiss origin, was still in its brass casing, complete with enough gunpowder for it to fire itself.

continued... Mr Khan said that if it had been struck hard enough or exposed to heat it could have gone off.

"This sort of thing should not be lying around. It was live, primed and active," he said. "But rather me pick it up than a little kid.

"How can you feel safe when you are finding things like this on the street?

"To get hold of one of these is not easy. You have to go through a scrutinised search, you need a licence and you have to belong to a club."

Ammunition of this kind would ordinarily be used in a small handgun or pistol, and both can be owned legally under licence.

But to leave strictly controlled goods out in the street would be enough for a firearms licence to be revoked.

The bullet has been examined at a Metropolitan Police laboratory and details about it kept for future reference.

A police spokesman said: "Recovering firearms and ammunition is a priority for the police. We take the same view of ammunition as we do of a gun.

"If it goes bang, it is still lethal."

Police are treating the unattended ammunition as a crime. Mr Khan alerted them at 10.16am, and they arrived at his shop to pick up the bullet at 11.32am.

Unless the round is loaded into a firearm, it is little more than a tiny firecracker in a brass casing. It will go pop in a fire, but won't develop any decent velocity. Pantywaists and bedwetters.

A short .22? Perhaps I should sent them a .357 Golden Sabre round - just so they can keep things in perspective.

If they are worried about .22 shorts, they really ought to worried about rocks, which are a whole lot more lethal.

I caused a 7.62X39mm (a much larger cartridge) to "fire" by carefully cutting the case neck at an angle with a Dremel tool. Not carefully enough: the heat ignited the powder, and the bullet stayed in my hand while the case fell behind my chair. Unburned powder was strewn across my work bench, the worst part of the occurrence. (I collect bullets).

Buy a nice impact bullet puller. It looks like a plastic hammer with a collet to hold the case head. A couple whacks against a stout board will pop the bullet loose, capture all the powder and leave the brass/primer untouched. It's a must for reloaders as perfection eludes most of us...especially after 80,000+ rounds. Sometimes you just fail to get it right. The bullet puller rescues all the pieces without any harm.

How do you punish a cartridge? Execute it, post haste.

The preferred method of execution in this case would be to shoot it. =)

Buy a nice impact bullet puller.

Thanks for your trouble. I think "my" particular 7.62 X 39 cartridge was bonded to the jacketed bullet, making it very resistant to pulling.

I've shattered about four of those impact bullet pullers over the years, and worn out dozens of collets. (Even bent one puller—and restraightened it—though the grip eventually crumbled).

A 22 will kill you dead as a stone! Before the spike stick was demanded for use in slaughter houses how do you think beef and hogs were killed?

Well yes, but that was at contact with a thin spot in the skull. If you didn't do it right, you had one PO'd cow.

My friend put one in a vice and shot himself in the knee when he hit it with a hammer

The vise would have at least partially contained the pressure. Probably not completely and thus the bullet did not have anywhere near the same velocity as it would have coming out of the shortest revolver barrel.

Im surprised they didnt call in the bomb squad, evacuate 5 city blocks and wrap the thing in det chord.

Probably would have, if they didn't want it for evidence, should they find out which criminal demon, or former free pistol target shooter, left it there. As I understand it, even .22 Olympic Target pistols are banned in Britain. Many of those used .22 short. That's probably what it was you know. A criminal would have cheap Russian, Chinese or "WalMart Special" ammunition, and in .22 Long Rifle, rather than short.

Oh good grief - a .22 SHORT being treated as some sort of massive crime? Give me a break - I know a few crazy folks who have set up little shooting galleries INDOORS (as in their house) using .22 shorts....

According to the box labeling (for California), exposure to this product can result in lead poisoning or reproductive harm.

Can you imagine an American newspaper writing a story about a single .22 short found in a doorway?

After the DemonRat Congress passes a couple/three gun control laws?

Yes

Yep, if you grind it up and eat it. Or grind it finer and snort it.

My heart goes out to all the British people and, sincerely, hope that this national trauma will be short lived. I'm sure your PM will recommend that everyone stay inside until they give the all clear

This is clearly, a national crisis unlike the world has ever seen and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

That was my first thought too. Surely it's satire.

I was looking for the Scrappleface link.
