The Hate America Marxist Left leading the "anti-war movement" realizes that the reason they can not get the large marches seen in the 60s is due to the lack of a draft. As soon as the draft was no longer a threat, the large marches of the 60s stoppped. Charlie Rangel works with those leaders. Two and a half years ago, Charlie Rangel helped the MFSO and Code Pink Death March protest from Dover AFB to Walter Reed Army Hospital to the White House. Charlie spoke outside the gates of Dover AFB. A march that saw no American flags outside Walter Reed Army Hospital, while supposedly patriotic military families placed black funeral wreaths on the fences and in front of the Walter Reed sign. Early 2005, the anti-war movement realized it was not resonating with the general public and held a meeting to define strategy (see The nation March 2005, "The New face of protest"). A draft is the "Holy Grail" that the Hate America Marxist Left sees as the key to having the movement "rise up" instead of "dry up" as it did with their desperate attempt at revival on Veterans Day in Philadelphia.
I had not thought of that. As Democrats (e.g., Palm Beach County's Democrat DA) do not distinguish between the using the powers of their elected office for the duties of the office versus the welfare of the party, you're right. Be very afraid.
In my opinion, this is part of self agrandizing bid to keep his constituents on the plantation. Historically, military service was the best way for blacks to get ahead. It was the first integrated institution and a powerful agent for understanding. However, stats show that this talk about equity has caused blacks not to join. They lose and the overseers like Rangel cling to power in their apartheid world euphemistically called the black community.
I feel the draft would be a good thing for one reason only. It just might instill some respect, honor personal responsibilty into an already spoiled generation.

It is all about skin color for democrats. Democrats would pass the draft and then blam the "white man".
There, obviously, are not going to be enough votes in the House or the Senate to move this onto to the President's desk where everyone knows it would receive a swift veto. This is only being pursued in an attempt to stir up accrimonious debate that might serve as a catalystic boost to the wacko anti-war pro-radical-islam (and therefore pro-war against us) left. Wrangel is a sorry excuse of an American and has never said an intelligent thing in his entire political life.

If Republicans play this right (yeah, I know, first time for everything) they could kill the Democrats in 2008 wiith this. Suburban moms DO NOT want a draft. They have been moving towards the Democrats in droves and this is what is killing the GOP in recent elections. Republicans can get them back if we can convince them that Democrats want to draft their sons.

The people who know say the volunteer military is working out better. The vast majority of people in Congress care about the quality of the military. They will heed the experience of our military experts, not the rhetoric of people like Rangel.

The notion that Democrats support a draft is laughable. If a draft were instituted, they would be the first ones protesting. Many Democrats are anti-military and anti-service.
You're absolutely right. But I think you can expect the Dems to reign in Charlie. His tactic is such a bomb. If they don't, they will pay dearly.

That's not going to happen. Even with Rummy gone, no one in his top-level military advisors wants a draft.
The draft has never worked really well in meeting the manpower needs of this nation. But it looks like somebody is "doing something".
If patriotism is not enough appeal for young men to rush to the defense of their country, then perhaps the country does not DESERVE to be defended.
There are those who are working very hard to make this nation look like just the kind of country nobody would want to defend. The "blame America first" crowd has been working on that aspect for some time now. After all, as they claim, America is just a cesspool of racism, a swarming mass of hedonists that have only their own satiation as their objective, raping the resources of the world, paying no heed to the future of coming generations, and grossly wasteful and extravagant in all facets of life.
And they have opened a second front on this degradation of the US by not enforcing the control of entry into this country, and effective control of foreign elements that are already here.
Then, when anyone tries to take effective steps to stem this erosion of will and resources, great derision is heaped upon the reformer, and the howling of the masses is taken to an even more extreme level. After a certain point, the conscientious citizens just go home and go into bunker mode. Not because they want to, but they are simply outnumbered. They will return when the storm has abated, and the fools have been destroyed in an orgy of mutual mayhem.
Rome failed because they had lost the sense of being the pre-eminent power in the world. The United States is in very nearly the same situation today.
