A GENERAL has affirmed the death sentence for a US Army sergeant convicted of murdering two fellow soldiers in a grenade attack in Kuwait at the outset of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the army said today.
Sergeant Hasan Akbar, 35, is the first US soldier to face the death penalty for killing another soldier since the end of the Vietnam War.

So how long does the Military take to execute someone? Does he now get to follow the usual 20 year path of endless appeals the Civilians use?

Isn't this the 'bright-path' that threw a grenade into a tent fulll of our men?
If so, the sentence can't be carried out soon enough.

Is this still carried out by firing squad? Lethal injection wasn't even around (officially) the last time such a sentence was handed down.

Probably lethal injection. Doesn't deserve a firing squad, hanging would be better.

So how long does the Military take to execute someone? According to posters on yesterdays thread it will be a long long time.

It won't take nearly as long as it would in the civilian system. There are several automatic appeals that must be satisfied (The Court of Military Review, Court of Military Appeals, etc.) and possibly even the Supreme Court, but I would be surprised if it stretched out more than a couple of years. I would also be surprised if it isn't commuted to life in prison. This guy will be really popular with the other prisoners.

From UCMJ Article 71: "a) If the sentence of the court-martial extends to death, that part of the sentence providing for death may not be executed until approved by the President. In such a case, the President may commute, remit, or suspend the sentence, or any part thereof, as he sees fit. That part of the sentence providing for the death may not be suspended."

This court martial took something like five years. In an actual war it would have taken five hours. Or a court martial wouldn't have been necessary.
