Available data suggest that genetic and congenital disorders are more common in Arab countries than in industrialised countries; recessively inherited disorders account for a substantial proportion of physical and mental handicap. Several factors may contribute to the high prevalence of genetically determined disorders:
High consanguinity rates 25-60% of all marriages are consanguineous, and the rate of first cousin marriages is high. In addition, isolated subpopulations with a high level of inbreeding exist. Furthermore, in many parts of the Arab world the society is still tribal. This has made the epidemiology of genetic disorders complicated, as many families and tribal groups are descended from a limited number of ancestors and some conditions are confined to specific villages, families, and tribal groups, leading to an unusual burden of genetic diseases in these communities (table B on bmj.com)
The high prevalence of haemoglobinopathies, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, autosomal recessive syndromes, and several metabolic disorders (fig A and table C on bmj.com)
The rate of children with Down's syndrome in some Arab countries exceeds the 1.2-1.7 per 1000 typical for industrialised countries. This may be related to the relatively high proportion of births to older mothers in the region (up to 50% of children with Down's syndrome in the region are estimated to be born to mothers aged 40 or over)
The lack of public health measures directed at the prevention of congenital and genetic disorders, with inadequate health care before and during pregnancy, particularly in low income countries
Services for the prevention and control of genetic disorders are restricted by certain cultural, legal, and religious limitations, such as the cultural fear of families with genetic diseases being stigmatised within their community and the legal restrictions on selective termination of pregnancy of an affected fetus.

"OK, everybody, frown and ululate for the camera!"
When Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin, the outrage wasn't over the cousin part, it was about the age.
When you're already accustomed to "mating" with goats, sheep, and camels, any human first cousin must seem like Miss Universe. What's a little incest among consenting tribesmen??
The Down's Syndrome has nothing to do with an over-50 mother being married to a cousin, it has to do with the age of the eggs. Correlation IS NOT causation.
There is also a reduction in Down's Syndrome babies in America because of abortion.
The 1.2-1.7/1000 births is also within range of the Hardy-Weinberg hypothesis of 1.7 mutation rate of each chromosomal synapse during fetal development.
The whole concept behind this article/study is flawed. I don't believe you people have picked it up. This article has been written to support abortion!
This article addresses Arabs, not Muslims -- most Muslims are not Arabs. Regardless, Arabs typically do not wear burkhas. The burkha is an Afghani thing. "Arab" isn't operationally defined in the BMJ article, and I can't go chasing down their sources, but I would assume Afghanistan is not part of their "Arab world;" it isn't even mentioned by name anywhere in the article. Burkhas are also typically blue, not black. You might be confusing it with the abaya, which is worn in Arabia, and is black.
now we need a chart of birth defects.
I wonder if the UN is going to speak out about this.
Er, actually ... well, here is a relevant fatwa. You might be surprised by pious Muslim butts, of any gender.
"I find it interesting that the excerpt doesn't mention the problem of polygamy. One guy with four wives in a modest village can make half cousins and half siblings by the boatload."

But now, your post, with its scientific, data-based evidence, drives the point home. A substantial number of Muslims suffer from the physical and mental defects associated with inbreeding.
To use scientific lingo, an awful lot of these worthy oriental gentlemen are more apt to be raving nutters than not. Doesn't exactly augur well for meaningful interfaith dialogue!
'One word: Incest." - Well, by now they are all cousins anyway. The question ought to be, how to exacerbate it?
I thought music was forbidden in Islam.
It is a pro-abort piece. Your call is spot on.
That's a bit of a stretch and it doesn't change the fact that these people are inbreeding WAY too much, and any scientific model shows that is not preferred.
Take a look at post 44.
The USMC is hard at work reducing those numbers as we speak.
Given the 'qualities' of the tripe coming out of our music industry is it any wonder? I look at the dregs who produce our music these days and find myself appreciating the muslim intolerance for the social influences of Bono, Madonna, Elton John, any number of rappers, & etc. Perhaps not all of their (muslim) opinions are necessarily flawed.
Regarding the "quality" of contemporary western "music" I agree with you, and there is certainly a valid point in blocking this garbage, but I suspect that in those Islamic tyranies it's more about control of the people than anything else.
Al Gore as a youth?
The genetic demise of the samaritans shows where the arabs are going with inbreeding. There are only about 500 samaritans left and marriage only occurs between 2 "houses"(family groups). Most of their babies are born blind or have other serious genetic disorders. The jews also have similar inbreeding problems, ie, high incidence of +AB blood types. It comes from a region of the world where a tribal group and its culture/religion can quickly disappear in the crowd, ie, the tower of babel. Thus the defense is to marry amoung your own kind, the PENALTY is recessive genes gradually decaying your people from within. Thus the entire middle east is genetically DOOMED whereas the dynamic genetic culture of america leads the world.
