Webb certainly has conveyed what he is: a boor. Never mind the patent disrespect for the presidency. Webb's more gross offense was calculated rudeness toward another human being -- one who, disregarding many hard things Webb had said about him during the campaign, asked a civil and caring question, as one parent to another. When -- if ever -- Webb grows weary of admiring his new grandeur as a "leader" who carefully calibrates the "symbolic things" he does to convey messages, he might consider this: In a republic, people decline to be led by leaders who are insufferably full of themselves.
But notice, in the second sentence of Webb's column, the word "infinitely." Earth to Webb: Words have meanings that not even senators can alter. And he has been elected to be a senator, not Humpty Dumpty in "Through the Looking Glass." ("When I use a word it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.") America's national economic statistics are excellent; Webb could actually tell us how much richer the "top tier" has become, relative to other cohorts, over a particular span. But that would require him to actually say whom he is talking about, and that takes time and effort, and senators -- Webb is a natural -- often are too busy for accuracy.

Only anybody who's taken a cursory look at the guy. And yet, I was lectured by some on this forum for not respecting a decorated Marine war hero.

The Wahington Compost doesn't have buyers remorse IMO. The article is written by George Will, their pet token conservative.

Buyer's remorse?
If Webb in any way plays a part in stopping a conservative justice from getting confirmed to the Sup Court (should President Bush get another opening), then there will be no remorse. Keeping the hot-button social issues out of the people's hands and out of the reach of the democratic process is of utmost importance to the Left.
The funny thing is that reading the commments at WaPo, all the democrats LOVE disrespecting the president.

Come on. You and I both know George Will doesn't have to try. He sounds intellectual becasue he is. That's his personality, his style, his schtik. It puts alot of people off. But I don't think it's put-on.
Granted WaPo wouldn't care if the devil were in the Senate as long as he caucused with the Democrats. And I understand WaPo is under contractual obligation to run Will's columns.
But WaPo's given this incident a fair amount of ink, including a very unflattering picture of Webb with the article yesterday, the kind of unflattering picture usually reserved only for Republicans.
I think WaPo may be thinking, "Couldn't we have found somebody who wasn't going to look like just another crazy, undisciplined liberal?"
You're absolutely right. But I bet WaPo's wishing they could have found an electable Virginia Dem who wasn't a snot-nosed brat.
The more average people see the likes of Pelosi, Rangel, Webb, etc., the more of an uphill battle it will be for the presstitutes to brainwash people into believing that the Dems are reasoned, thoughtful statesmen with ideas that are good for the country.
IOW, Webb acting out in public makes it harder for Hillary, and that's not to be tolerated.
I hope you're right, but as you said, his 'character' was on display for all the world to see BEFORE the election.
Yet they chose to run with 'macaca' for weeks on end and do all that was in their power to drive a good man from office.
It may be that they will regret if his behavior distracts from getting their cherished socialist agenda enacted. However, I don't give the WaPo people credit for that much maturity. IMO they are of a mind with the Daily Kossacks and the rest of the nutroots who will hail Webb as a hero for this kind of 'bravery'.

George Allen would still be senator if George Bush and the RINOs were not obsessed with this amnesty crap. Many areas of Virginia are being overwhelmed with the illegal alien invasion, especially northern Virginia where Webb won big (with the help of a lot of illegally registered alien voters who made the 8000 vote difference).
The conservatives in Virginia did turn out and did vote for a strong border enforcement candidate, Allen. It was all the swingers and the Reagan Democrats who are losing thier jobs to the illegals and watching the crime rate explode while their neighborhoods spiral downwards that said "Enough" to their perceived notion that the White House and Republican Senate just didn't give a damn about them anymore.
Webb, boorish big mouth that he is, actually campaigned on "strengthening our borders" - meaningless words that sounded good enough and which he would never have to deliver on. He even wrote a WSJ column on the problem, with, of course, no solutions.
