Iraqi forces can take over by June 2007, says PM

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Thursday his government's forces would be able to take over security command from U.S. troops by June 2007 -- a move which could allow the United States to start withdrawing.

"I cannot answer on behalf of the U.S. administration but I can tell you that from our side our forces will be ready by June 2007," Maliki told ABC television after meeting President Bush in Jordan.

Bush offered him strong backing in their talks and said Iraqi forces would be trained more quickly to take over but rejected suggestions he was seeking a "graceful exit" for U.S. troops.

According to a transcript released by ABC, the Iraqi leader said: "At the beginning of next year we will increase the training of our forces ... when they reach an acceptable level, we can talk about transferring power from multinational forces to Iraqi forces.

"I can say that Iraqi forces will be ready, fully ready to receive this command and to command its own forces, and I can tell you that by next June our forces will be ready."

All right by me.

They need to have the ability, desire, and the firepower.

Maliki would be insane to ship the US out too soon....his own head is on the block. He needs Saddam dead, imho. He also needs US airpower and logistics to remain.

One thing for sure. When a Muslim leader says something, you can bank on it.

I certainly hope so. If Iraq becomes another Vietnam 1975, our foreign policy will be torn to shreds. We might as well go isolationist because no one would trust us to help them, and thus won't be our ally.

Great news if it's true.

One thing the left doesn't understand about us: we don't want to be at war right now. It would be wonderful if we weren't. But what we get that they don't is that it isn't a matter of what you want. This is something we HAVE to do, and failure is not an option.

I do want for us to be able to begin a pull-out from Iraq. I only want it to be done when the Iraqi security forces are able to handle the situation on their own. Anti-warsies want the troops to come home tomorrow (huge disaster).

Unfortunately, pull out of Iraq...then prepare for the next battle in the WOT.

I think that Bush is saying one thing in Public "We will stand by them as long as they need us" and then saying a different thing in private "Get your act together cause we are out by June of 2007".

I do not see this as dishonest. It is a part of life that you do not tell your enemies what your plans are. Its like feinting with your left and landing a right..part of the game we must play to survive.

I agree. Steve Hadley's assessment of the PM is most likely correct. We don't have many cards to play since we are not the sovereign in Iraq (thank the Lord we are not). . .

Before all this plays out, I believe a large portion of the Sunni's will be asking the US to stay because they don't trust their own government.

Perhaps we should plan ahead and get all the jets off of our aircraft carriers in the area so that we don't have to push them off into the ocean?

Personally, I think you should watch the joint press conference held today by President Bush and President Maliki for information, rather than comments made on ABC News.

They'll have the firepower and limited ability but I have strong doubts about their desire.

I guess they want us to leave so they can have their civil war unobstructed.

Is a civil war such a bad thing? At least their busy blowing each other up. Maybe some good will come of it when the dust settles...

Iraqi forces take over by June 2007? That incompetent PM made Bush wait a day for their meeting. That may have "Malarkey's" Shiite prelates and their followers snickering. Does anybody remember what Kennedy did to Diem ? Or what happens to people who "diss" Bush ? Bush may say Maliki is the greatest thing to Iraq since sliced bread but he better be toast soon enough.
