Dying wish granted by Mystic Seaport for Texas woman
WTNH ^ | December 2, 2006 | Tricia Taskey

(Mystic-WTNH, Dec. 2, 2006 6:15 PM) _ A trip to Connecticut is a dream come true for a Texas woman.

The 64-year-old grandmother has stage four cancer and only has months to live. One of her last wishes was a trip to Mystic Seaport.

It's a dream come true for Sharon Wynn. She wished for a visit to Mystic Seaport.

The Texas grandmother and great grandmother is losing her battle with breast cancer and only has 5 to 8-months left to live.

Today one of her dying wishes is coming true.

"This is awesome. I can't even tell you, I have chills standing here on this ship. It's unbelievable," says Wynn.

Wynn saw picture of Mystic Seaport in a magazine a few years ago and ever since she wanted to visit.

"The serenity of it all. A writer has to have atmosphere."

She planned on coming here after she retired from teaching to write a book but her deteriorating health meant the end of that dream.

That is until Mystic Seaport got wind of her wish list.

"We learned about it in a newspaper article and when we realized we were on her list of things to do it was an easy decision to make and she was ecstatic," says Michael O'Farrell, Mystic Seaport.

Mystic Seaport flew her in and put her up for the weekend.

One thing Sharon really wanted to do once she got here to Mystic Seaport was to spend the night on a tall ship, a tall order but the folks here came through so she'll be sleeping on the Joseph Conrad, a privilege only for very special guests.

(Link to a photo of the Joseph Conrad - it is awesome)

"Just for a person to ask, I know they don't do that. So I feel blessed."

She'll spend the night in pretty tight quarters but she wouldn't have it any other way.

"They asked me are you sure? I'm sure. If I don't I won't be true to my heart."

Wynn says she's at peace with her prognosis and now she's focusing on making some last minute memories.

If you get the chance, see "The Last Holiday" with Queen Latifah.

It was a great movie about a last wish.

I visited there 12 years ago this time of the year, it's a nice place. I'm glad she got her wish to visit. Prayers for her.

Texas sized ping. I know that somebody keeps a Texas pinglist, and I did not mean to leave anybody off. Great story here.

What a beautiful thing for them to do. May God shower many blessings on those who did this wonderful thing.

Brer Flyer kept one, but he is unfortunately in charge of dogs & sausage in Heaven now.

Unfortunate for us, that is!

Thanks for the ping, great story.

The people at the Seaport are wonderful people! During my college years (years ago) I rented an apartment for a summer month in Mystic. The apartment was right over the Mystic draw bridge near the Seaport. It is wonderful that this lovely lady got her wish.

i've been a mamber since 1984. it's a truely great place, especially if you want to unwind in a simpler time.

I beleive that they're overhauling the Morgan at the moment with the Conrad next in line.

my daughter (and I) built a small canoe-type boat there in one of their classes. nice boat.

Do you still live in CT? I grew up in Middletown and East Hampton and worked in Ledyard before moving to FL in 69. :)

I'm in Norwich, almost Taftville section. Used to be (till last dec) on the West Side.

Don't really dig CT, planning on going to Maine when my ticket gets punched. no alligators and we absolutely LOVE snow.

The Foxwoods casino has really dominated the area, and there really isn't much else except the seaport and the aquarium (they've done a lot with the aquarium!)

but my heart resides with the seaport.

Galveston has or at least it HAD a tall ship. That would have been a lot closer to home for this very ill lady.

That would be the very lovely Elissa,an 1877 square-rigged Scottish barque . She's still there. I have to think it would have been a lot warmer to spend the night aboard her than up in Mystic, too. But I've been both places - they're both great & Ms. Wynn still has plenty of time to see Elissa if she hasn't already. Be even better if she could go out on one of her sea trials in March.

It's ship to be square!
