Poll Reveals America's Desire for Religion and Values
NEW YORK—A recent survey commissioned by the American Bible Society and carried out by respected pollster Zogby International shows that 85 percent of American viewers want more religious values and references to the Bible, and less sex and violence shown on television.
The survey, entitled "What Is More Offensive on Television: Religion or Sex and Violence?" was conducted by Zogby in November.
"We firmly believe that the Bible plays a critical role in the on-going development of our culture and social fabric of our country," said Dr. Paul Irwin, President and CEO of the American Bible Society, in a press release last Wednesday. "Although America is a nation of many faiths, and in some instances no faith, Americans still believe that the Bible teachings and values are an essential part of our common character."
Recently, NBC cut references to God and the Bible from the popular children's television show "Veggie Tales," an animated program that teaches moral lessons. NBC says the goal was to reach as broad an audience as possible with positive messages while being careful not to advocate any one religious point of view. The Bible Society points to NBC's move as indicative of the warped view that television networks and ad executives have taken toward the Bible and religious values.
In the recent poll, one question asked was: "Do you agree or disagree with NBC's decision?" The results showed that 29 percent agreed, 60 percent disagreed, and 11 percent were not sure.
A majority of those polled also indicated that they were very distraught over the glorification of sex and violence every time they turn on the television.
"The American public is in fact very interested in non-restricted religious communication and media that carry messages of meaning," said Irwin. "We think it is time to take responsibility for the television industry and for all media, and be careful that they are not the arbiters of taste for the people who watch their programs."
Three more surveys are being planned by the American Bible Society, who say they challenge television networks and movie producers to stop cutting most faith-based references.
Since 1816, the American Bible Society has focused on translation, publication, and the distribution of Bibles to as many people as possible. Elias Boudinot, founder and first president of the society, is known for playing a role in early proclamations to make Thanksgiving an official American holiday in 1789.

Methinks we'll have to stand up and be counted a lot more than by answering polls before any positive change will occur.
I agree.
I've started answering them and taking the ones that come in my email.
But they would risk offending 15% of the population! Therefore, offend 85% because they are nice enough to forgive.
I've given up on TV....some radio and a lot of Internet. I bet GOOGLE has some data that would be revealing as to what people REALLY are watching.

Oh, I'm ALL FOR answering polls very forthrightly and forcefully--even emphatically.
But the real rubber meets the road when we interact with one another and the culture at large--especially in visible media prone areas, ways, issues.
This passive wimpy Jesus-meek-and-mild shallow, hypocritical, self-devouring "Christianity" has to go.
Prayer helps too.
I don't watch TV either, except for football. Neither do I listen to talk radio any more. Too depressing to listen to especially when I realize that nothing is changing regardless of how loud Limbaugh, Hennessey, Savage and others shout. The human voice does not impress anyone, only the next 9/11 will grab the public's attention.
Have to agree. I don't listen to talk radio much anymore either. Got tired of all the talk.
But I'm glad it's there for those who just might be persuaded to the conservative view.
I think its funny (or really sad) that Liberals preach are tollerant of all views (and people) except those that disagree with them: That would be God too..
I think prayer has changed world events more than all the efforts of all the armies and politicians and dictators combined.
