He Needed The Money To Buy The Brooklyn Bridge
The Stiletto ^ | December 11, 2006 | The Stiletto

Former Congressman Ed Mezvinsky (D-IA) fell for "just about every different kind of African-based scam we've ever seen," said federal prosecutor Bob Zauzmer on the ABC newsmagazine, "20/20." Mezvinsky got taken in by the "black money" scam no fewer than three times, repeatedly traveled to Nigeria and ultimately lost more than $3 million in various swindles.

Being criminally stupid doesn’t land you in prison, but this does: On the strength of his social connections to Bill and Hillary Clinton – as well as his son's romantic relationship with their daughter, Chelsea - Mezvinsky convinced people to participate in the scams and began stealing from clients. He is now serving a seven-year sentence for fraud.

Interesting that he used the names of Bill and Hillary Clinton to induce people INTO scams.

As soon as I heard their names I would run!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Mezvinsky

Edward (Ed) Mezvinsky was an American U.S. representative from 1973-77 for Iowa’s 1st District. He sat on the House Judiciary Committee and voted for the impeachment of President Nixon for his activities in the Watergate scandal.

After serving in Congress, Mezvinsky moved to Pennsylvania to be with his wife, Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky. He was chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee before making a failed run for state attorney general in 1988.

Mezvinsky was indicted in March 2001 and later pled guilty to 31 of 69 charges of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud. Nearly $10 million was involved in the crimes. The plea agreement stated that in committing his crimes, "He boasted to many [victims], for example, of a close personal friendship with President and Mrs. Clinton and of his son's friendship with Chelsea Clinton at Stanford University." Edward Mezinsky if the father of Marc Mezvinsky, who is allegedly engaged to be married to Chelsea Clinton, daughter of the former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton. [[2]]

Tangled web indeed.

Being a demonrat he must have thought he could turn things around by talking to them. Three times.

'Once bit, twice shy.' What are twice bit and thrice bit? Greedy libidiots?

This dates from 2003 but is worth a another look.

According to the NBC News,

Former U.S. Rep. Ed Mezvinsky pleaded guilty to stealing $10.4 million from his friends, family and business associates and even his mother-in-law .

Mezvinsky tearfully expressed remorse before being sentenced Thursday to six years, eight months in prison for defrauding business associates, friends and family.

Federal prosecutors called Mezvinsky, 65, a "con man" who faked mental illness to avoid punishment for bilking friends and business associates.

[Snip]

Prosecutors said Mezvinsky began soliciting cash for fraudulent schemes in the 1980s, and eventually collected millions for business ventures that never materialized, including an oil deal, a coin trading company and an effort to sell bracelets in Africa.

In the meantime, Mezvinsky fell victim to several Nigerian investment scams and lost much of his borrowed money. He blamed the losses on a bipolar disorder and a bad reaction to anti-malaria drug Lariam.

[Snip]

The heir to a small supermarket chain fortune, Mezvinsky was a star athlete in Ames, Iowa, who went on to earn a law degree in California. By age 36, he was representing his home state in Congress.

He served on the House Judiciary Committee that voted to impeach President Nixon.

After serving in Congress from 1973 to 1977, Mezvinsky became an ambassador to a United Nations commission and Pennsylvania Democratic Party chairman. He also spent millions on unsuccessful races in Pennsylvania for the U.S. Senate in 1980 and attorney general in 1988.

You can read more about the gentleman here.

http://leftohio.blogspot.com/2006/12/chelsea-clinton-possible-future-father.html

If reports are true that Chelsea Clinton and her boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky are considering marriage, the father of the groom won't be able to attend the wedding until he is released from prison in November 2008.

Ed Mezvinsky, a former Iowa Congressman, is serving a seven-year sentence for fraud after getting caught up in a series of Nigerian e-mail scams.

Pine Bark Beetle alert for this family tree!

Their negative stories about Dems are buried in their blogs. Good luck finding it as a lead story or on the front page of their site.

Marjorie Margolies used to be a TV news reporter but I thought I heard her on the radio, too. http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=M000129

When I was a kid, my dad was a big supporter of Mezavinski. At that time he was a pro-life democRAT that pledged to support leglislation banning abortion and over turning Roe VS Wade. But, like most Democrats who claim to be so, he was only pro-life when necessary to save the life of the politician.

I believe he was defeated by Jim Leach.

Note, he left Iowa after divorcing his young wife to chase other tail. Margolies was his 2nd wife.

He is a perfect representative of that party.
