Rapidly Expanding Technology and Internet Making Seniors More Vulnerable To Scam Artists: Media Needs To Do More To Provide Information On Subject Today we seem to be hearing about more cases involving fraudulent behavior than at any time in the nation's past, though the FBI does not have accurate statistics that reflect this reality. This is due to the fact many victims of fraud do not report what has happened to them because of numerous reasons. Some are simply embarrassed to admit they fell prey to scam artists and grifters. But these types of crime are taking place at a...

Phishers Hack Into Compromised Accounts, Tell User's Friends They've Been Robbed In London, Need Money Immediately A phishing scam that seems to have hooked and hacked many Facebook members' accounts since early this year appears to have picked up in intensity over the last month. Hackers are logging into users' accounts, but it's actually not the hacked member who falls victim to the lucrative scam. It's their friends. It was a bit of a surprise when my friend Blaire sent me a message on Facebook earlier this week to tell me she was in London. It was even more surprising...
  • TARP Funds Located?: Nigerian Scam Hits Citibank for $27 Million

    02/22/2009 5:12:45 PM PST · by nysuperdoodle · 20 replies · 837+ views
Paul Amos, a Nigerian citizen, was arrested trying to enter the US through Los Angeles last week, for scamming $27 million from Citibank. I wonder if this worked with other banks. Maybe that's why none of them want to tell us where the TARP funds are... they sent it all to Nigerian scammers. Well, with so much free money floating around, and losses subsidized by taxpayer money, why bother to check these things?

Former Congressman Ed Mezvinsky (D-IA) fell for "just about every different kind of African-based scam we've ever seen," said federal prosecutor Bob Zauzmer on the ABC newsmagazine, "20/20." Mezvinsky got taken in by the "black money" scam no fewer than three times, repeatedly traveled to Nigeria and ultimately lost more than $3 million in various swindles. Being criminally stupid doesn’t land you in prison, but this does: On the strength of his social connections to Bill and Hillary Clinton – as well as his son's romantic relationship with their daughter, Chelsea - Mezvinsky convinced people to participate in the scams...

The African men wooed the disabled woman over the Internet for several months, then asked Sheryl Sandberg for a favor. The men sent her a package containing money orders, checks from foreign banks, cashier's checks and traveler's checks, and asked her to distribute the items via Federal Express and U.S. mail to 80 people. Sandberg agreed. After all, three of the four men she talked to via Yahoo's instant messaging had promised to move to Spokane and marry the 52-year-old. They called her "honey." "They tried to sweet-talk their way in," Sandberg said. The first package arrived with prewritten labels...

A renowned psychiatrist from UC Irvine was duped into squandering at least $1.3 million of his family's fortune on a Nigeria Internet scam, according to a lawsuit recently filed by his son. ...Louis Gottschalk, a neuroscientist, is the founding chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at UCI College of Medicine. He gained national prominence by announcing in 1987 that President Reagan had been suffering from diminished mental ability as early as 1980. He came to this conclusion by using the Gottschalk-Gleser scales, an internationally used diagnostic tool he helped develop for charting impairments in brain function, to...
