I've never visited Dachau, but did hear a riveting talk about the liberation of the camp by Felix Sparks, who was the battalion commander of the first unit in. He was wrongly accused of overseeing a massacre of the Waffen-SS guards, but was later cleared. Some of the men did shoot a few SS, but Sparks ran to the scene and put a stop to it, as photographic evidence later showed. His orders were to let no one in or out - so he denied entry to a Brigadier General!

Sparks had a distinguished career after the war, including Commanding General of the Colorado National Guard and 20 years on the Colorado Supreme Court. Quite a man.

okay, let's be fair here. David Duke was a Democrat at a time when Southern Democrats were strongly opposed to granting civil rights to blacks. The Republican's southern strategy split many of these Democrats away from their party and lured them into the Republican party. Strom Thurmund is a good example. He ran a militantly pro-segregation presidential campaign in 1948 as a Democrat and switched to the Republican party in 1964.

The South was dominated by very conservative Democrats from reconstruction to the civil rights movement. From the civil rights movement to now it has been trending to the Republican party to the point that it is now solidly Republican.

So using the argument that David Duke was once a Democrat has a lot of blow back. It's also true that the Republicans lured these anti civil rights Democrats into the Republican party.

David Duke did run for governor of Louisiana, against no less than Edwin Edwards. According to my sister living there, the unofficial slogan for both of them was "hold your nose and choose." She knows of several of her friends who, along with her, voted in the other contests but couldn't vote for either of these two dips.

Those in denial would also have to deny that Hitler exterminated over 7 million Christians as well. Enough gas crystals were found at the camps to exterminate another 20 million more people. (Heard these comments on Savage yesterday.)
