Airlines workers sacrifice camel at airport

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Workers at Turkish Airlines celebrated a job well done by sacrificing a camel at Istanbul airport and their boss has now been suspended.

The national flag-carrier said on Wednesday maintenance staff killed the camel at Turkey's busiest airport after sending a batch of aircraft back to the supplier ahead of schedule.

Turkish Airlines has suspended the head of plane maintenance pending an investigation, the company said in a statement.

Turkish newspapers carried pictures of the camel, two rugs thrown over his hump, ahead of Tuesday's sacrifice. They also showed pictures of the beast chopped up into chunks of meat.

Top-selling daily Hurriyet said 700 kilos of camel meat were distributed among the workers. Turkish Airlines was accepted last week into the Lufthansa-led Star Alliance.

Many Turks slaughter animals, usually sheep or cattle, in an annual Muslim festival called the Festival of the Sacrifice, which falls in early January.

When I was in Nepal, they annually sacrificed water buffalo to the jet engines, so that the engine god's thirst for blood would be satisfied, and no people need die.

Does maintenance on high tech, leading edge jet engines. Then butchers a camel to celebrate a job well done. Sort of a mid-east style BBQ 'eh?

I have bee n to celebratory BBQs, but slaughter of the upcoming meal was not part of the celebration. We did that a couple of days in advance.

OK, I guess they think canapes are weird,

Why did the camel get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks.

Personally, I don't have a problem with them slaughtering a beast of burden for a festival BBQ. Doing it AT the airport might raise other issues. Doing it on the grounds of their company building might be OK.

We have beef and pork ribs EVERY 4th of July.

A company picnic sounds fine to me-- just a different animal in play here.

Who has a real beef with this?

In the US we would have had a BBQ. Our emphasis would have been on the eating and not the killing.

Sounds like a nonnews story to me. They got done early and celebrated.

wait.. was this a sacrifice or a butchering?
usually a sacrifice would be burned on an altar of some sort. I'd think if they gave the meat to the workers, they merely butchered it.
