The fundamentalist killing on both sides is standing in the path of peace But tell me why are we arming the Israeli army with guns and tanks and bullets? And if God is great and God is good why can't he change the hearts of men? I really like Waits' recordings. However, he allied himself with the antiwar crowd a few years ago. I haven't bought anything after "Blood Money" out of protest.
Was Waits against the Vietnam War? One would never know- his work from that period never referenced the War or any other political issue.
Yes, "Small Change" is the pinnacle of his Island-label style. But "Rain Dogs", "Nighthawks" and "Closing Time" are also excellent, IMO.

Not sure how he got here but I'll not take his early days away from him. Saw him with Zappa 30 some odd years ago and he did "San Diego Serenade" with nothing but his snapping fingers. Still rank "Heart of Saturday Night" as one of my favorite all time albums.

He was a little strung out on heroin during those days I believe. Could be wrong.

I thought it was coke, but heroin seems likely as well, since he was living with Rickie Lee Jones in those days.
