Man grabs home invader's pistol, shoots him four times

BRADENTON -- A man who was shot early Saturday during a botched home-invasion robbery in the Braden Crossing neighborhood was arrested Monday on an attempted murder charge.

Authorities say Bradenton resident Clayton Nathaniel Dowling, 23, was one of four men who barged into a house in the 5500 block of 47th Court East while pretending to be police officers.

The victim, Jerry Johnson, was hiding in a closet when Dowling confronted him, according to sheriff’s reports. Johnson punched Dowling and grabbed the pistol that was tucked in the man’s waistband.

Johnson fired at Dowling, striking him four times, sheriff’s Detective Jason Fitwater said. Dowling was also armed with a shotgun.

One of the robbers opened fire in the house, trying to kill Johnson, authorities said. Johnson’s fiancee, who was holding a 2-week-old baby, was threatened with death. Johnson chased the men from the house, firing at them as he ran, authorities said. Neither he nor his fiancee were injured.

Dowling, a felon, was dumped on the roadside near Manatee Memorial Hospital. Authorities later found the blood-soaked van in the 1100 block of 36th Avenue West in Bradenton.

A dramatic breakin w/ guns when the residents are home... and awake??

These guys are not only dangerous... but total idiots. Even among criminals, few would consider this to be a favorable risk-reward scenario.

Never, ever, underestimate a cornered man trying to defend his wife and two week-old. That Johnson has a brass pair!

First of all … why was the victim hiding in a closet? Especially when Johnson’s fiancee, who, holding a 2-week-old baby, was near. Hero … need more info.

Rhetorical question:

Why is it that the vast majority of these citizen heroes are from the South and Midwest -- essentially Flyover Country ?

I suspect we Freepers know the answer to this no-brainer ! **S**

Merry, Merry Christmas to my Fellow Freepers from an increasingly crotchety old sailor.

Liberals say "a gun is dangerous because it can be taken from you and used against you."

I guess the perp should have listened.

Johnson was pretty dam lucky the gun was loaded and operational because the perp also had a shotgun... or perhaps Johnson had the gun all along?

TOP TEN REASONS JOHNSON WAS HIDING IN THE CLOSET...

    10. Was faster than his fiance.

    9. That's how the guy did it in "The Professional."

    8. Wanted to impress his PC girlfriend with his non-violence.

    7. Was looking for Chuck Norris.

    6. Was sulking and then the knob came off.

    5. Kid wouldn't stop crying and he was going smooth off.

    4. Was being punished for tattling.

    3. Wasn't sure how she'd take it if he "came out."

    2. Didn't want to be sent back to Cuba.

    1. Was re-tracing his steps to find out how he got into that relationship in the first place.

If the homeowner had believed they were cops he'd probably be dead. I'm not a fan of the "no knock" style police raids and this story is one reason why.

"Why is it that the vast majority of these citizen heroes are from the South and Midwest -- essentially Flyover Country ?"

Saw this awhile back and thought it was funny, but true....

Question: How do you tell the difference between Democrats, Republicans and Southern Republicans? The answer can be found by posing the following question:

You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges. You are carrying a Glock .40, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Democrat's Answer:
Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!
Does the man look poor or Oppressed?
Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?
Could we run away?
What does my wife think?
What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?
What does the law say about this situation?
Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it?
Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?
Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?
Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?
If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?
Should I call 9-1-1?
Why is this street so deserted?
We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.
This is all so confusing!
I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.
