Former national security adviser Sandy Berger removed classified documents from the National Archives in 2003 and hid them under a construction trailer, the Archives inspector general reported Wednesday. The report was issued more than a year after Berger pleaded guilty and received a criminal sentence for removal of the documents.
Inspector General Paul Brachfeld reported that when Berger was confronted by Archives officials about the missing documents, he said it was possible he threw them in his office trash.
The report said that when Archives employees first suspected that Berger _ who had been President Clinton's national security adviser _ was removing classified documents from the Archives in the fall of they failed to notify any law enforcement agency.
Berger, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully removing and retaining classified documents, was fined $50,000, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and was barred from access to classified material for three years.
The report said that when Berger was reviewing the classified documents in the Archives building a few blocks from the Capitol, employees saw him bending down and fiddling with something white, which could have been paper, around his ankle.
However, Archives employees did not feel at the time there was enough information to confront someone of Berger's stature, the report said.
Brachfeld reported that on one visit, Berger took a break to go outside without an escort.
"In total, during this visit, he removed four documents ... .
"Mr. Berger said he placed the documents under a trailer in an accessible construction area outside Archives 1 (the main Archives building)."
Berger acknowledged that he later retrieved the documents from the construction area and returned with them to his office.
Berger, with the authorization of former President Clinton, was reviewing National Security Council documents on Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida, Sudan, and related presidential correspondence. The review was to facilitate Berger's impending testimony before the House and Senate intelligence committees.
Rolling on the floor laughing my A$$ off!
Some of these notes were the ones that were written as the CIA was to attack Osama Bin Laden and his family in Afghanistan.....the attack was overruled by the Clinton Administration didnt want "civilian casualties" on their hands.
Of course, history was already rewritten by the 9/11 Commission.
When the director of the National Archives found out that Berger was being investigated by the FBI for stealing classified documents, the director's first call went to.... Bruce Lindsey.
That National Archives director was subsequently fired, but many suspect that before he left he likely destroyed the originals at Lindsey's request.
more worrisome of what Berger 'put in the files than what he took out.'
The subject of the Barrett Report drives me absolutely crazy Baynative. All these stupid think tanks like the ISG and the 911 commish are given carte blanche by the media and mainstream America, yet this "Report" is the secret that dare not be spoken.
Like you had correctly stated, ANY member of Congress can obtain this full report. IN ADDITION, they can read it on the floor and have it be a part of the public record thus legally revealing it for all to see.
But they won't do that, they would rather lose the election by being nice guys.
Gorelick ( and the 9/11 Commission Report Dietrich L. Snell was a Senior Counsel & Team Leader ) were put in charge of disseminate what information got seen by the full Commission.
So the woman who created the Wall which blocked the flow of information, was again put in charge of blocking information to the Commission which was charged with finding out why information got blocked.
Nothing could epitomise the bias of the MSM more than this story in the past twenty years if you ask me. I mean seriously, can you imagine if this were Scowcroft, McFarlane, Poindexter or Condi Rice? They would have been hung by their heels and shot for treason by now in the MSM, where were you Dan Rather on this story?..three thousand innocent Americans died and this maggot was removing classified documents to cover-up his Administration's culpability in that fact and nobody wants to report it?
Let's see where this story goes in the next couple of days...nowhere I bet...a pox on them all.
No big deal...Bush administration won't prosecute or even investigate. Nothing to see here...move along.
I'll do my part.
Hey, no sweat. Justice was done. They took away his library card. /s
National Archives doucments stolen and hidden under a construction trailer; $90,000 hidden in a freezer in New Orleans. Hey, Nancy Pelosi, how about looking at your own Party and their "corruption." When you're done looking at those two examples, then look at your own dirty laundry.
Yep. That's how it worked.
Why is this guy still not in jail? Taking classified documents and he's still free!
"Filthy disgusting lying stealing disreputable bastard.
Destined to be a star in Hilary's administration."
Tell us how you really feel.
"Berger, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully removing and retaining classified documents, was fined $50,000, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and was barred from access to classified material for three years."
100 hours cs? It was probably written off.
$50,000 is chump change.
Only THREE years barred from classified material? I would have made it permanent!
The entire sentence is a farce!
So that's how Sandy refers to his panties, 'a construction trailer.' I bet he is one slutty little guy.
