Spare Saddam, Clark Urges Bush By Nathan Burchfiel CNSNews.com Staff Writer December 27, 2006

(CNSNews.com) - Deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's life is in President Bush's hands and should be spared, said former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark on Wednesday.

Clark, a member of Saddam's defense team, said the decision Bush makes following an Iraqi court's rejection of Saddam's appeal "will have long-term consequences for the peace and stability of Iraq, and for the rule of law as a means to peace."

Saddam, who was convicted Nov. 5 and sentenced to death by hanging, could be executed anytime in the next 30 days. He is currently in U.S. custody in Iraq, and Bush must approve his transfer to Iraqi authorities to carry out the execution.

Clark reiterated his longstanding criticism of the Iraqi Special Tribunal, the court that tried Saddam and his co-defendants, calling it "notoriously unfair." He also criticized the "so-called appeals court in Iraq, which did not take the time to examine the trail record and defense briefs."

Saddam's defense team had until Dec. 23 to file appeals documents. The court released its decision upholding the conviction and sentence Dec. 26.

Clark said once Saddam and the other defendants are turned over to Iraqi law enforcement, they will be exposed to "summary executions, torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading punishment -- all in violation of U.S. and international law."

Not only shouldn't Bush spare Saddam, but I don't really think it IS Bush's decision, since Saddam was tried and convicted by the Iraqi court system, under the constitution of the Iraqi government.

EVEN IF the President were to be favorable to sparing Hussein, it's not his call.
It's up to the Iraqis.

And why didn't he appeal to Saddam for the lives of the countless innocents that died at his hands???

Why is Ramsey whining? There is no shortage of nutjobs that this nutjob can defend. He is guaranteed employment for the rest of his life.

Ramsay Clark is not a nut-job. Saddam Hussein is a longtime paying client of his law practice.

No small part of Clark's personal fortune comes from his legal work on behalf of Hussein's regime, and if Hussein is spared the gallows, there is probably a lot of money in hidden bank accounts that can compensate Clark for appellate work on his client's behalf.

Hussein's life might be worth several hundred thousand dollars to Clark in the short term alone.

Take it to the Iraqi Civil Liberties Union, Ramsey, ol' fella (felon?).

I don't believe Bush has the POWER to pardon Saddam. That is pretty much up to the Iraqis.

I agree! It will be a conviction and execution done by IRAQIS who are lining up by the hundreds to offer their services on hanging day!

The funny thing is, Clark should hang right alongside Saddam.

I would agree to spare Saddam Hussein, if Ramsey Clark would be hung instead.

Clark has ALWAYS been an anti-American nutcase/a$$hat. I think he should volunteer to hang WITH Saddam if he loves him so much.

I think Ramsey is just worried about his guilty/not guilty average being thrown for a loop.

"...it's not his call. It's up to the Iraqis."

True. Plus the Iraqis ought to hang Clark and Saddam side by side just on general principles.

Exactly. Saddam was sentenced in an Iraqi court, not an American one. Bush could pressure the Iraqis to spare Saddam, but why would he want to.

I think it's an old Iraqi tradition, isn't it? That the condemned man's lawyer should hang along with him? At least that's what some old Iraqi once told me . . .
