Bush Remarks on the Execution of Saddam
AP Wire ^ | Dec 30, 2006

Posted on 12/29/2006 9:55:42 PM PST by jdm

Statement of President Bush on the death by hanging of Saddam Hussein, as provided by the White House:

Today, Saddam Hussein was executed after receiving a fair trial — the kind of justice he denied the victims of his brutal regime.

Fair trials were unimaginable under Saddam Hussein's tyrannical rule. It is a testament to the Iraqi people's resolve to move forward after decades of oppression that, despite his terrible crimes against his own people, Saddam Hussein received a fair trial. This would not have been possible without the Iraqi people's determination to create a society governed by the rule of law.

Saddam Hussein's execution comes at the end of a difficult year for the Iraqi people and for our troops. Bringing Saddam Hussein to justice will not end the violence in Iraq, but it is an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain and defend itself, and be an ally in the War on Terror.

We are reminded today of how far the Iraqi people have come since the end of Saddam Hussein's rule and that the progress they have made would not have been possible without the continued service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.

Many difficult choices and further sacrifices lie ahead. Yet the safety and security of the American people require that we not relent in ensuring that Iraq's young democracy continues to progress.

Re your tagline, finally someone blames Bush for something he actually had a hand in bringing about.

Tom T. hasn't recorded anything in awhile. Wonder if he's done... That would be a pity.

and watermelon wine. That's not new. I think I have all of his recordings. Haven't seen anything new in 10 years of more.

One thing the victims of Saddam won't have to do is watch Saddam mock the judges and the court system any more..His arrogance must have really been so hard to watch.

The murderous tyrant is dead..Thank you to our armed forces and to our President for freeing Iraq, for capturing Saddam and to the Iraqi court system for a fair trial and swift execution.

If Saddam murdered civilians in 1982, then why is Donald Rumsfeld, representing President Reagan, shaking hands with Saddam in 1983?

Shaking Hands: Iraqi President Saddam Hussein greets Donald Rumsfeld, then special envoy of President Ronald Reagan, in Baghdad on December 20, 1983

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB82

The Reagan administration and its special Middle East envoy, Donald Rumsfeld, did little to stop Iraq developing weapons of mass destruction in the 1980s, even though they knew Saddam Hussein was using chemical weapons "almost daily" against Iran, it was reported yesterday.

US support for Baghdad during the Iran-Iraq war as a bulwark against Shi'ite militancy has been well known for some time, but using declassified government documents, the Washington Post provided details in 2002 about Mr Rumsfeld's role, and about the extent of the Reagan administration's knowledge of the use of chemical weapons.

Furthermore, in 1988, the Dow Chemical company sold $1.5m-worth (£930,000) of pesticides to Iraq despite suspicions they would be used for chemical warfare.

Hyprocrisy at its best?
You decide ...

Our US troops in Iraq and the IDF in Israel have no time to "yawn" as a result of this (hanging) wonderful example of democracy at work ;> (Was there an international trial? the US does stand for something - does it not?) There is only one question here. Who has the oil? It is a very frightening precedent that the United States can invade a country on false pretenses, depose its leader and summarily execute him without an international trial or appeals process. This is about vengeance, not justice, for if it were the latter the existing international norms would have been observed. http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/20061229_saddam_hussein_executed/ As an Israeli who was directly attacked by Saddam in 1991, I am pleased. As an American, I am less proud of what took place this morning in Iraq and the fallout for which we - the Western world will now realize. Our we more safe? We didn't need to hang Saddam, he could have died in jail from a stroke or heart attack. History will judge.

But ya know - perhaps its easier being 6-10,000 miles away from the action. Yes, one can then have the luxury of yawning. God bless the US and Israel. Provide us with the wisdom to make the right decisions at the right time. May 2007 be a safer and more secure year for all of us!
