Jerry Bagby is typical of the oil men who are prospecting for a fortune in the Midwestern biofuels boom. He's convinced there's oil in these hills and he's found a well that no one else is using.
Bagby and a longtime friend have cobbled together $5 million to build a new biodiesel plant on the lonely croplands outside this southeast Missouri town. They're betting they can hit paydirt by exploiting a generally overlooked natural resource that's abundant in these parts chicken fat.
There's a virtual gusher of the stuff at a nearby Tyson Foods Inc. poultry plant. Currently, the low-quality fat is shipped out of state to be rendered and used as a cheap ingredient in pet food, soap and other products.
Bagby and his partner Harold Williams plan to refine the gooey substance, mix it with soybean oil and produce about 3 million gallons of biodiesel annually.
Today, only a tiny fraction of U.S. biodiesel is made from chicken fat, but that seems likely to change. The rising cost of soybean oil which accounts for roughly 90 percent of all biodiesel fuel stock is pushing the industry to exploit cheap and plentiful animal fats

It'll be good to see the whaling industry make a comeback. Nantucketers will hoist their sails and sharpen their harpoons.
Once the whales are culled they can move onto Rosie O'Donnel.
I'll bet Harold Bates is slapping himself over all the crap he had to put with for his idea about how to get energy from chickens.
I've invested in a company that buys vegetable stocks from fast food houses and I'm very happy to report that there is tons of money in collecting aliphatic oils and then reselling.
Anyone want a franchise?
Yes I am interested it is going to be a good investment...
you could be on a winner there...loose weight as you drive...
LOL
Wait'll PETA gets a load of this.
People will be able to drive to the hamburger joint sitting in leather seats in a car fueled by cow fat.
Soon we will be swimming in the stuff. Goal 7 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2012. President Bush said recently we have gone from 1 billion to 5 billion ethanol, already. But we could never have done it without the Dems. sarc/

There was also another more recent thread about a hospital being used as a source for fat but I can't find it.
But this ain't it.
No animal fat is available in large enough quantities to make a signficant dent in the fuel business. Biodiesel processes using algae or other single-cell organisms is far and away the best bet.
knock
None of these ideas are the replacement for petro fuels, but the can help lower consumption. I love seeing wastes or otherwise useless materials converted for fuel, if done so without gov't involvement, and if profitable.
Correct about diesel. I think it was originally designed to use an oil that didn't have alot of use then... peanut oil.
That's always an admirable thing, but thermal depolymerization does a better job (it uses actual WASTE, and a far wider range of different wastes, not a viable feedstock for other, more high-value processes).
Rest In Peace, old friend, your work is finished.......
If you want on or off the DIESEL "KnOcK" LIST just FReepmail me........
This is a fairly HIGH VOLUME ping list on some days......
Thanks!.....
