NEW YORK -- Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd, a veteran lawmaker who entered Congress in the post-Watergate class of 1974, will announce his bid for the presidency, Democratic officials said Wednesday.
Dodd, 62, will make the formal announcement in an interview Thursday morning on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show _ a curious bit of timing since he'll be forced to compete with heavy coverage of President Bush's speech on the Iraq war.
Dodd will travel late Thursday to Iowa, which will host the first presidential nominating caucus next January. He heads to South Carolina, an early primary state, on Sunday.
Kathy Sullivan, the chairwoman of the Democratic Party in New Hampshire, said in an interview that she had spoken to Dodd and he said, "'I'm not going to do the exploratory thing, I'm going to plunge right in.'"
The 26-year Senate veteran enters a growing Democratic field overshadowed by two likely candidates _ Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois. Outgoing Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack has already announced his candidacy, as have former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

Dodd entering the race means Kerry won't. Kennedy will not support two morons for President.
AAAAHHH!! Does anyone know where he's going? I'd like to make sure I'm at least 100 miles away.
I hope Dodd can explain his wifes role with the Import Export Bank after her tenure as a staffer for him. She is now his wife. Wasn't he the head of the banking committee? Please explain Chris. We need to know.
Funny how the small acts are now broadcast over the net. Thanks for the viewpoint.
"Are there any waitresses in the audience that would like to make a sandwich with us?"
I understand that if elected, his first official act will be to surrender to Cuba.
Connecticut (barf alert) ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
Who?
Imus? Why not Wayne & Garth's program in Aurora, IL?
I think this is about a cushy retirement. As far as I know, he can disperse the campaign funds as he wishes once the campaign is over.
Thanks for the ping. Dodd is dead in Connecticut. This morning, the radio station WTIC 1030 AM, came out really disgusted with Dodd. Some of the disgust is because he never appears on local radio in Connecticut. The other disgust that he would announce such a wonderful event as running for President of the U.S. on Imus. All in all, who cares.
