I called my son in Anchorage at 2:00 a.m. and he said all was well so far so I finally did get to sleep.

Thanks. Me, too. I think it didn't hit there, though. Love, Mxxx

The Emergency nuclear attack, amber, and tsunami warning Broadcast System issued a tsunami warning to Alaska coastal areas last night, advising that homes are not built to withstand a tsunami, then called it off. An 8.3 is common enough in the region where it occurred that it might be considered normal, about the top end of the range.

thanks for the comeback. They took the tsunami warning off about ten O'Clock last night and I finally got to relax and go to bed. These things are scary. We have the siren system all along my area but one wonders how long after the siren goes off do you have to get to safety elevations. I guess they figures if it wasn't a big wave at Midway and Guam, Hawaii had nothing to worry about. Aloha from Maui. fh

Our worst case scenario for a seismic sea wave event comes from the Aleutians to the North and South America down around Chile. There are no islands in the wave's path to give early warning.

There are buoys that measure these events but don't rely on them.

Nary a hiccup. The islands saw a cm level change, even the worst Japan saw was a 1 M wave.... pretty mild all round.

Good. The warnings can be scary but that's better than having one come upon you in the night, with no place to run!

I am Sooo glad I live inland. The coastal areas are beseiged with horrific storms. We may get a blizzard or sleet storm in the winter but that's about it. M

"Your post reminded me of those dreaded math problems I never grasped "if tommy leaves on a train in New York, and lucy leaves on a train from Florida......"

Those math problems are easy. The probability that Tommy will meet someone else by the time he gets to North Carolina is exceeded only by the probability that Lucy will be an emotional basket case by the time she arrives. Either way the couple is doomed, and won't meet again for 20 years.
