Obama's charm lost on America's black activists
The Sunday Times ^ | January 14, 2007 | Tony Allen-Mills

HE is a media darling, a paparazzi target and a source of inspiration for millions of Democrats who dream of retaking the White House in 2008.

But Senator Barack Obama, the charismatic African-American who is shaking up the presidential primary race, has not impressed some of America’s most powerful black activists.

Civil rights leaders who have dominated black politics for much of the past two decades have pointedly failed to embrace the 45-year-old Illinois senator who is considering a bid to become America’s first black president.

At a meeting of activists in New York last week, the Rev Jesse Jackson, the first black candidate to run for president, declined to endorse Obama. “Our focus right now is not on who’s running, because there are a number of allies running,”...

The Rev Al Sharpton, the fiery New York preacher who joined the Democratic primary race in 2004, said he was considering another presidential run of his own...

Harry Belafonte, the calypso singer who became an influential civil rights activist, said America needed to be “careful” about Obama: “We don’t know what he’s truly about.”

The unexpected coolness between the old civil rights guard and the new Democratic hopeful has added an intriguing twist to the budding rivalry between Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton...

“They are basically jealous,” said a Democratic strategist who has not yet decided which candidate he intends to support. “They’ve been toiling in the trenches for decades, and along comes this son of a Kenyan farmer and suddenly he’s measuring the drapes in the Oval Office.”

The activists don't like him because he's stolen their thunder.

While obama is as liberal as it comes, he's not some poverty pimp two-bit hustler like Blood Diamonds Jackson or Rev. Al Race Card Puller.

He doesn't every time he gets in front of a mic start spouting about how everything is some conspiracy by big whitey to keep colored people down which is how these activists make a buck.

That's why they feel the heat.

The old media never mention his mother nor his step-father who raised him.

When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced and his father returned to Kenya. His mother married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian foreign student, moving to Jakarta with Obama when he was six years old.

Four years later, Obama returned to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents...

Think Obama Mania is largely an interest aggregation thing. Democrats have difficulty moblizing young voters ( A Conservative skill set) and minorities particularly black voters. While the percentage of blacks voting for dems is high at 89% the turnout among blacks is comparatively low. The Obama Hype is an effort to energize that demographic. it may work temporarily but will fade over time.

The unexpected coolness between the old civil rights guard and the new Democratic hopeful...

Since when is Banana Boat Belefonte a member of the civil rights establishment? Since he started bloviating a few years ago, taking advantage of the Hate Bush atmosphere? I think he was interviewed on the O'Reilly Factor. Does that make him important? Or is it because he had a hit record back in the '50's?

Even the DUmmies know that Hillary is a weak candidate. She's another Kerry or Gore. The DUmmies believe the only thing is to find another Bill Clinton. Another empty suit who is all mouth and everyone will blindly flock to him. Obama is showing the same style.

I remember back in '84 how Mondale was going to energize the woman's vote by selecting the renowned Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate. She turned out to be such a sharpie that she can't even get a 30-minute slot on the networks.
Even Democrats know is when someone is just being hyped in order to sell newsprint.

It's called "peaking too soon" and it's the reason experienced men are better lovers than young men.

Yep...Patently obvious what is happening. Obama is a warm up act. The Obama Phenomema is old fashioned ward politics writ large. He may be a VP pick ( But I doubt it) Essentially Obama he is the Democrats JC Watts. While Watts and Obama are ideological mirror images, Like Watts, he is bright articulate and engaging. But like Watts he doesn't have a shot at real insider power.

Just my guess, but it appears from the article that Obama has not paid the normal extortion fees to Rev Jesse Jackson, Rev Al Sharpton or Harry Belafonte.

Louis Jordan is the man! For several years, I had a radio show on Saturday nights I called the "Saturday Night Fish Fry", with Mr. Jordan supplying the theme song. The first rock and roller, IMHO.
