Sen. Dodd Calls for the Removal of the Confederate Flag from South Carolina's Statehouse Grounds

(Greenville-AP) January 14, 2007 - US Senator Christopher Dodd calls Sunday for the removal of the Confederate flag that flies at the South Carolina Statehouse. The Connecticut Democrat was attending a Martin Luther King Junior memorial event at a Greenville church Sunday night.

He says black and white young people from South Carolina are fighting under one flag in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dodd says the Confederate flag belongs in a museum.

Dodd will be at the King Day at the Dome rally at the Statehouse Monday. The event was started six years ago as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People launched economic sanctions against South Carolina to force the flag from the Capitol dome.

It was moved from there and put out front at the Confederate Soldier Monument on Statehouse grounds.

Unfortunately they aren't all solved. Dodd is still a Senator.

Several of my client's fathers served in the Confederate Army.

How does that work? There aren't many people around who were born before 1920, and at that time Confederate veterans would have been in their 70s at the youngest, most in their 80s, and not very many were siring kids.

Try this, slick, California and Texas still proudly fly their respective republic flags from when they were not part of the U.S. Why do they do this?

Never would. A 'damn yankee' to me is one of two things. Someone who comes down here, stays, and doesn't at least respect our traditions. You don't necessarily have to like them but you have to respect them. This includes complaining that you can't have too many bagel shops. Or it's someone who doesn't come down here but still thinks they know better how we should live and what we should respect.

Either way, they're telling other people how they should live. The busybodies can stay north of the line.

Very brave Americans died fighting honorably for that flag more than a century ago. You may disagree with their convictions of that time but the fact remains that they were brave Americans and not criminals.

If we allow the showing of the Swastika in this country we should definitely permit honoring the Stars and Bars.

Many Confederate veterans were tough as nails. The Sons and Daughters that live in this area tell the same tale. The young women were poor during the early part of the 20th Century, the men their age immature and unstable, and the veterans were responsible and gentlemen. The marriages went like the females were in their early 20's and the men in their 60's. There were many children from those marriages. Now, these men and women (the children) are in their 70's. The real Sons I know are in their 70's and can keep up with those 20 years younger. It must be the genes and the work ethic. One real Son I know real well has a unique relationship to me. His father was a Private in the 7th Mississippi Cavalry and his Sgt was my Great Great Grandfather.

Very interesting but as I'm getting older it is also interesting and encouraging to know men in their 60's were marrying women in their early twenty's. ;O)

if a state wanted to fly ... a Mexican flag, it would be Ok, because it's "up to the states to decide."

I find this interesting. If California put the Mexican flag on the statehouse grounds in Sacramento, should it be considered objectionable?

I don't know if the Texas statehouse has the six flags.

The question is - why does this non-issue mean so much to you?

I think that it would be more appropriate to ask this same question to those who wish to dictate what we do in South Carolina from outside of our borders.

I don't know that it's a strawman. Suppose Gov. Richardson were to decide to put the Mexican flag above the New Mexican statehouse to celebrate the heritage of the state? Would it be objectionable?
