Sen. Dodd Calls for the Removal of the Confederate Flag from South Carolina's Statehouse Grounds

(Greenville-AP) January 14, 2007 - US Senator Christopher Dodd calls Sunday for the removal of the Confederate flag that flies at the South Carolina Statehouse. The Connecticut Democrat was attending a Martin Luther King Junior memorial event at a Greenville church Sunday night.

He says black and white young people from South Carolina are fighting under one flag in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dodd says the Confederate flag belongs in a museum.

Dodd will be at the King Day at the Dome rally at the Statehouse Monday. The event was started six years ago as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People launched economic sanctions against South Carolina to force the flag from the Capitol dome.

It was moved from there and put out front at the Confederate Soldier Monument on Statehouse grounds.

Dodd spoke out against the Confederate flag too back in 1992. Clinton from Arkansas, Gore from Tennessee, both were in the COnfederacy and had flags on state grounds too. Not to mention that statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest in Tennessee. Yep, I remember Dodd, the Dems, and the NAACP speaking out against that. NOT

Perhaps you can change your FR name from "smalltownslick" to "smalltownhick".

Just making a grandstand play for the black vote.

By now, most blacks can see through the Democrats now. Consider the high-profile of blacks that ran for elected office as Republicans. Boxer's treatment of Condoleeza Rice. Yeah, the Dims really care about black people.

Same in my town. And the same on the grounds of our state capitol. They even have a statue to honor Confederate women there. I drive by the one in my town every Sunday on the way to church. Most folks in this town wouldn't cotton too well to folks taking that statue down.

Senator Dodd:

Thousands of brave Confederate men fought, bled and died for that flag.
Just who the hell do you think you are to demand the removal of that flag?
You yellow-belly commie prick.

By your logic, if a state wanted to fly a Muslim flag or a Mexican flag, it would be Ok, because it's "up to the states to decide."

Nice strawman argument. FReepers here will have fun using you for verbal target practice.

It represents a very important part of America's heritage and honors the courage of men who fought and died for Independence, something every American should be proud of.
They may have been misguided, but they put their lives on the line for what they believed in.

that flag has no place flying over a government building of any kind.

Since you are not paying attention and reading comprehension is not your strong suit:

1) It's not flying over a government building, it's flying over a confederate war memorial, adjacent to the state capitol.

2) It was moved from the top of the capitol building in a compromise that also resulted in a Civil Rights memorial being built adjacent to the capitol. The NAACP backed away from the compromise that was negotiated by both political parties and have maintained their boycott of SC because the flag is still flying over government property.

(Sidenote: The civil rights memorial features likenesses of prominent civil rights leaders including South Carolina native, Jesse Jackson.)

Dont you believe that for a minute.

The blacks who ran as republicans are greatly in the minority and here in Maryland the blacks refused to elect Michaek Steele and voted for the White Democrat cardin. Blacks are in the pocket of the democrats. Still. How much crying from blacks have you heard over Boxers treatment of Dr, Rice. Dr. Rice isnt black enough for them ,in fact they dont like her. The Dems dont give hoot about Black people, but Blacks will vote for them anyway as long as the entitlements keep coming. They are bought and paid for.

"As long as you ARE part of the United States, that flag has no place flying over a government building of any kind."

Does your statement include state flags also? After all...we're all Americans. Why should each state have a separate flag?

We made a compromise in 2000

A foolish mistake, since the left can be counted on to dishonor their agreements.

I notice you don't have the courage to fly a flag on your FR home page.

Are you a yankee, or just ignorant?

Dodd is just doing the Democratic Primary math. The SC primary is just behind Iowa and New Hampshire. It is the first southern primary.

SC voters split 55% GOP, 45% Democrat. SC is 30% black, 95% of which vote Democratic. This means that about 75% of the voters that ask for a Democratic ballot in the primary will be black.

Does anyone not understand why Dodd is playing the race card? You don't win the SC Dem vote without the black vote, period. The key for any Democrat in SC is obtaining the endorsement of Congressman Jim Clyburn.
