51% of Women Are Now Living Without Spouse
New York Times ^ | 16 January 2007 | Sam Roberts

For what experts say is probably the first time, more American women are living without a husband than with one, according to a New York Times analysis of census results.

In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits.

Several factors are driving the statistical shift. At one end of the age spectrum, women are marrying later or living with unmarried partners more often and for longer periods. At the other end, women are living longer as widows and, after a divorce, are more likely than men to delay remarriage, sometimes delighting in their newfound freedom.

In addition, marriage rates among black women remain low. Only about 30 percent of black women are living with a spouse, according to the Census Bureau, compared with about 49 percent of Hispanic women, 55 percent of non-Hispanic white women and more than 60 percent of Asian women.

In a relatively small number of cases, the living arrangement is temporary, because the husbands are working out of town, are in the military or are institutionalized. But while most women eventually marry, the larger trend is unmistakable.

So, how does a man stay masculine enough within a marriage to sustain a wife's interest when it comes time to do the dishes, clean the cat-box, etc? [Nice Guy Dud here] I read up to the current posts and returned to yours because no-one else quite hit on my first impulse, though the advice to show confidence is a part of it. Decisiveness.

"Whatever you want to do, dear," is not the way to begin a discussion. You can settle on a solution once both of you have expressed a preference. And if you concede to her will thinking it's the gentlemanly way to go, next time it's your pick. Just my opinion, but not even nice girls can respect a pushover for very long.

As for housework? If you think it unmasculine to contribute to upkeep of a home, you may find her too busy to keep YOU up, if'n you know what I mean. :o)

"You just not like tattoos or did you have a bad experience with a "painted lady"?

No bad experiences with a tattooed lady -- since I would be repelled by one, as opposed to being attracted to one for a "relationship"..

I'm just an unabashed admirer of the unadorned female body.. It just doesn't get any better than that...or simpler than that.

In my opinion, a tattoo on a lady says more about her than she imagines...

The problem with tatoos is that they are anchors, and thats what makes them cool too.

I dont carry any myself

I believe that a core source of this disfunctionality in the institution of marriage is the message from several sources (including a daytime radio show host which I won't name) which says that "men should sleep with as many women as possible in their 20s and not even think about marriage until they are 35..."

That makes for one whore of a man who simply cannot adapt to a serious, committed relationship in which he only sleeps with one woman... My roommate describes it like this: "Why just eat cheerios for the rest of your life if you can go to the grocery store and get froot loops, rice krispies, cocoa puffs, etc..."

And yes-- shame on the women they find to sleep around with that don't demand more... But, this message that comes across from these talk show hosts, rap songs, anc celebritis needs to be quenched, and how will that happen without a strong father figure for kids now???

Oh, and by the way river rat, I happen to be an intelligent, attractive, non-pierced, non-tatooed, non-golddigging woman in her 20s who cannot find a date to save my life that will even open a door for me...So no, I wouldn't mind living alone if this is the only gene pool I have to pick from.

Well maybe you are right, however is that the fault of the viewer or wearer?

I think I made a point in a previous post to you, but didnt hear your opinion back.

In the several years that Ive had my tattoo Ive only had one person judge me by it (that im aware of, most folks dont notice it at all)

I was a young house wife and a woman and her 20 something daughter moved in. we became friends (the 2o something).

Her mother stated she didnt like her hanging out with me because "she smokes and has a tattoo"

Funny, but i "grew up" just fine. still married, raising a terrific kid and her daughter who she felt the need to shelter from me because of outward things did not.

Last I talked to her 5 years ago (ive moved a few times since then, relocating to different states). She was on her 3rd marriage and 5th child. she left her faith and was a goth (whatever that is). It was very sad:(

It is true, as cliche as it sounds, that you cant judge a book by its cover.

Its your right not to like them, to have a preference, but should do so without making such quick judegments. if you continue to do so, you may miss out on some great friends:)

Tattooed, half naked in public, jumping into the sack with at the drop of a hat and then burdened with the result of that "free and self expressive" life...

So that's the secret. I need to start wearing a hat.

Interesting about #19 on that list. So far this year, I have kept my new year's resolution about going to church. The church I've been going to is doing a series on addiction. The pastor listed some statistics about drugs, adultery, etc. in the church versus those not involved with religion and in every case the percentages were higher for the church goers.

I used to have the preconception that those in church, regular Christians, were holier than thou types, better at handling life and its temptations. And, there are Christians who seem to feel like now that they've been saved and they're going to heaven, they can do whatever they want. Like being saved means they have some sort of cosmic get out of jail free card. But mostly, now I see that church is a place for a lot of people who are suffering and are looking for help from something greater than themselves, as well as from good examples around them.

*****Single churchgoing Christian women far outnumber single churchgoing Christian men. Why? Theories abound*****

Some have suggested it's because of the "Jesus is my boyfriend" contemporary songs.
