unbelievable, the extent to which DOJ was hunting these guys down to nab them as they passed through the US.

this is what DOJ spends its time on, Sandy Berger walks, but this case is a top priority. As well as getting dirt on Jeanine Pirro was a few months back.

So specifically what law did they break, when did they break it, and where were they at the time?

Those are pretty darn good questions!

Not only are these arrests quite arguably a violation of the World Trade Organization rules, it also looks like to me like they're now applying an ex post facto law, which goes against everything this country is supposed to stand for.

I suppose the government would probably argue that since these guys aren't American citizens, they aren't subject to our Constitutional protections. Nevertheless, I find this kind of bullying to be detestable.

And the Theocons wonder why people crossed party lines in *droves* in the last election.

Let's not get crazy. People didn't cross party lines in droves over the stupid Internet Gambling law.

Never again will I vote for a republican simply because he is a republican.

The only difference between republicans and democrats is which rights they want to take away.

I'd wager the government will win it's case, as absurd as it may be.

I don't think they will.

Tell your two Republican buddies who stayed home to go pound sand. I have nothing to say about this topic, but your brag about two sanctimonious whiners is very ironic, given your statements in the post below.

"There are millions of Republicans who play online poker, and they are boiling mad about this nanny-state bulls**t from the blue nose wing of the Republican party."

i play online poker and am extremely frustrated on where the party stands. i know a few as well who stayed home on election day because of this.

Please. The Congress didn't pass that legislation out of any sense of moral duty or because the bingo loving "religious right" demanded it. They passed it because they couldn't figure out how to tax internet gambling, and because they are in the pocket of the brick and mortat gambling interests.

Good synopsis.

Maybe they should have taken up drug smuggling. They might have gotten protection from the "justice" department.

Of course they didn't. The Gambling Law is but a single straw atop the camel's back.

Don't steal. The government hates competition.

Using government to kill internet gambling is in no way conservative.

...they're now applying an ex post facto law, which goes against everything this country is supposed to stand for. ...

Not the first time it's happened. Billy Bob Clinton signed a tax bill that was retroactive. I don't recall if Congress was Dem or Repub controlled at the time.

People downplayed the ban on internet gambling but this is a major reason the dems won so many seats in congress this last election. Sneaking the bill through on the sly and making it illegal for Americans to gamble on line was a dispicable move and done mainly by Republicans and it pissed a lot of republicans off. There is no difference between these freedom grabbers and the liberals.

Because it was sneaked thru Congress is a major reason why it was not a reason for the GOP loss. Even though every vote counts the GOP a best lost a handful of votes because of this stupid legislation.

I agree, it didn't help the situation.

More Red Meat from Bush to the Big Mommy and Daddy Government Social "Conservatives"?? Fiscal Conservatives got a government grown at 3 times inflation including the Highway Bill, No Child Let Behind and Expanded Free Drugs for Seniors at full retail for Drug Companies. George W., while possessing a few good points is a RINO disaster.

yes, and if you look at the margins of defeat in some congressional districts (even some senate races) - don't discount that this was not a factor. a small factor, sure - but in close races, a series of "small factors" stacked atop each other, can make the difference.

If the states currently decide if they want brick-and-mortar gaming and lotteries, why is it Congress makes the decision that Internet Gambling should be illegal?
