Ministers: No Bush library at SMU

By ANGELA K. BROWN, Associated Press Writer 27 minutes ago

A group of Methodist ministers from across the nation launched an online petition drive Thursday urging Southern Methodist University to stop trying to land George W. Bush's presidential library.

The petition, on a newly created Web site, http://www.protectsmu.org, says that "as United Methodists, we believe that the linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate."

"Methodists have a long history of social conscience, so questions about the conduct of this president are very concerning," said one of the petition's organizers, the Rev. Andrew J. Weaver of New York, who graduated from SMU's Perkins School of Theology.

SMU officials did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.

SMU emerged as the apparent winner in the library competition last month when the site selection committee said it was entering into further discussions with just SMU, the 11,000-student, private university, which is first lady Laura Bush's alma mater.

Some SMU professors have opposed Bush's foreign policy, mainly the war in Iraq. Faculty members also have complained that the library complex's think tank dedicated to the philosophy of the Bush administration would hurt the school's reputation.

Conservative Methodists: Time to switch religions. Yours has been taken over by leftist demagogues more interested in politics and Bush hate than in preaching salvation.

Bet the media won't mind this religious excursion into politics.

The first name on that list is Joe Wilson. Coincidence?

More sanctimonious horse manure from the United Methodist Church. I'm surprised they still allow the president to occupy a pew in one of their congregations. How do they put up with the desecretion? Aren't the afraid the roof will cave in? I guess he must kick in to the collection plate pretty well.

Switch from Methodism?!

Are you nuts?!?

How about I just keep to my lifetime habit of not giving $$ to SMU.

Yours has been taken over by leftist demagogues more interested in politics and Bush hate than in preaching salvation.

As witnessed by the inordinate number of Gore 2000 & Kerry 2004 bumper stickers in the parking lot at the local Methodist Mega-church over the years.

Oh, yeah, like anyone instantly thinks of the Mehodist church when it thinks of SMU. A whole bunch of the US thinks it's in southern Massachusetts.

(I'm an alum, too - and not sure I ever actually saw a Methodist on campus, lol.) Never went to a pot-luck supper while there, either.

Why I left the Methodist Church. Even if you like your local church, the central organization gets a chunk of your offerings to support creeps like this.

This is how much they hate the President: they will hound him even after he leaves office. Not even Richard Nixon was treated this badly.

We recently started attended a Methodist Church here in my conservative town, after being life long Baptist. This Methodist Church is much more conservative than the Baptist Church we were attending that let some liberal lobby group come talk to the congregation. Plus the fact that the Baptist pastor had photo's of him and Jimmy Carter all over his office. I don't think you can blame all Methodists for these few that oppose the library. I knew they should have PICKED TEXAS TECH for the Bush Library, (there would have been liberal profs against it) but majority of us West Texans would have welcomed the Library. They better pick Waco now!

How often does he sit in a Methodist pew? I know he is Methodist, but he grew up Pisky and I thought he was attending an Episcopal church close to the WH.

Bet the objectors to President Bush's library will fall all over themselves to snag Hillary Clinton's library if she ever becomes president, God forbid.
