Update on WVMT situation: someone on a radio-interest mailing list up in Vermont says:

"The morning guys at WVMT (Charlie & Ernie) (were on) explaining the pending loss of Howie Carr show next week. Apparently, Carr was on with the guys explaining that the Doyle (replacement) show would be 'short lived.'
Indications are that the rights fees were to be raised to exorbitant levels when considering market rank and size."

So Wally and Steve in Montreal, hope this won't last long...

Art Buchwald was indeed in the death pool. I remeber Howie saying "aw, ok". There are some people he doesn't want in the pool.

I knew he was in the death pool before and am pretty sure he was on the last one.

Wikipedia: "Buchwald v. Paramount (1990) was a breach of contract lawsuit filed and decided in California in which humorist and writer Art Buchwald alleged that Paramount Pictures stole his script idea and turned it into the 1988 movie Coming to America. Buchwald won the lawsuit and was awarded damages, and then accepted a settlement from Paramount before any appeal took place...In 1982, Buchwald wrote a screen treatment that was pitched to Jeffrey Katzenberg of Paramount, with the intention of starring Eddie Murphy, who was under contract to Paramount at the time. (snip)

"When the movie Coming to America was released by Paramount in 1988, Eddie Murphy was given story credit. Buchwald was not paid, or credited as the story writer. Buchwald sued Paramount for breach of contract, as his contract with Paramount stated that he would be paid a certain amount if his treatment were made into a film."

I doubt that Howie will have another death pool today. Too soon after the last.

Yup...but who knows.

Malibu, your winter wonderland:
Global warming...no wait, bring back those "global cooling" conspiracy theories from the 70s...

"The California Highway Patrol began escorting motorists north on Interstate 5 through the Grapevine area at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. By 9:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol was escorting motorists in both directions. The roadway had been closed overnight due to snow and ice."

Well they're out there having fun in the warm California sun...

A short lived Doyle run is fine by me.
I have tried again and again to listen to his show but can not get into it.
Honestly, RR, I suspect WRKO program director Jason Wolfe is just winging it at this point.

Well the short lived Doyle run refers to WVMT in Burl VT
which is replacing Howie with Jerry starting next Monday.
Was not referring to WRKO. As for them, Savage at 7 and
Doyle at 10 but when there's a game, Savage follows it.
And starting in April with the Sox there will be LOTS of
7 pm games (as of now there are occasional 7 pm Celtics games
on WRKO)

--No death pool today; maybe tomorrow. There was a winner with
the name of Art Buchwald

I wonder if WRKO would bump Savage back to the 10:00 PM slot on game days. I would suspect Savage has better numbers than Doyle.

Yes, Art Buchwald was in the death pool -- which Howie might have on tomorrow.

In the meantime, here's my old favorite Art Buchwald (RIP) column:

"Making It Clear to the French"
by Art Buchwald

It is traditional that every year I pause in my duties and explain Thanksgiving Day to the French people. This holiday which means so much to us is incomprehensible to them, and I sincerely believe if the French could understand Thanksgiving they could understand us.

One of our most important holidays is Thanksgiving Day (known in France as le jour de merci donnant.)

Le jour de merci donnant was started by a group of Pilgrims (pèlerins) who fled from l'Angleterre before the McCarren Act to found a colony in the new world (le nouveau monde) where they could shoot Indians (les peaux-rouge) and eat turkey (dinde) to their heart's content.

They landed at a place called Plymouth (now a famous voiture Americaine) in a wooden sailing ship called the Mayflower (Fleur de mai) in 1620. But while the pèlerins were killing the dindes, the peaux-rouges were killing the pèlerins, and there were several hard winters ahead for both of them. The only way the peaux-rouges helped the pèlerins was when they taught them to grow corn (mais). The reason they did this was because they liked corn with their pèlerins.

In 1625, after another harsh year, the pèlerins' crops were so good that they decided to have a celebration and give thanks because more mais was raised by the pèlerins than pèlerins were killed by les peaux-rouges.

Every year on the jour de merci donnant, parents tell their children an amusing story a about the first celebration.

It concerns a brave capitaine named Miles Standish (known in France as Kilometres Deboutish) and a young shy lieuteneant named Jean Alden. Both of them were in love with a flower of Plymouth called Priscilla Mullens (no translation). The vieux capitaine said to the jeune lieutenant:

Go to the damsel Priscilla (allez tres vite chez Priscilla), the loveliest maiden of Plymouth (la plus jolie demoiselle de Plymouth). Say that a blunt old captain, a man not of words but of action (un vieux Fanfan la Tulipe), offers his hand and his heart, the hand and the heart of a soldier. Not in these words, you know, but this, in short, is my meaning.

"I am a maker of war (je suis un fabricant de la guerre) and not a maker of phrases. You, bred as a scholar (vous, qui êtes pain comme un étudiant), can say it in elegant language, such as you read in your books of the pleadings and wooings of lovers, such as you think best adapted to win the heart of the maid.

Although Jean was fit to be tied (convenable a être emballé), friendship prevailed over love and he went to do his duty. But instead of using elegant language he blurted out his mission. Priscilla was muted with amazement and sorrow (rendue muette par l'étonnement et la tristesse).

At length she exclaimed, interrupting the ominous silence: "If the great captain Plymouth is so very eager to wed me, why does he not come himself and take the trouble to woo me?" (Ou est-il, le vieux Kilometres? Pourquoi ne vient-il pas auprès de moi pour tenter sa chance?)

Jean said that Kilometres Deboutish was very busy and didn't have time for those things. He staggered on, telling what a wonderful husband Kilometres would make. But finally Priscilla arched her eyebrows and said in a tremulous voice: "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" (À chacun son goût.)

And so, every fourth Thursday in November, American families sit down at a large table brimming with tasty dishes and for the only time during the year eat better than the French do.

No one can deny that le jour de merci donnant is a grande fête and no matter how well-fed American families are, they never forget to give thanks to Kilometres Deboutish, who made this great day possible.

Actually that IS what they're doing. No game: Savage, then Doyle. 7 pm game (or 7:30, 8...): SAVAGE follows the game.
And if Sox or Celts are on West Coast, Savage would be on at 7.

See what I mean tomorrow night. The Celtics play Sacramento
at home, game starting at 7:30 pm. You'll hear SAVAGE after the game.
