AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Hours after Gov. Rick Perry kicked off his second full term in office, Ted Nugent helped him celebrate at a black-tie gala, but not all attendees were pleased by the rocker's performance.
Using machine guns as props, Nugent, 58, appeared onstage as the final act of the inaugural ball wearing a cutoff T-shirt emblazoned with the Confederate flag and shouting offensive remarks about non-English speakers, according to people who were in attendance.
Perry's spokesman, Robert Black, downplayed the Tuesday-night incident.
"Ted Nugent is a good friend of the governor's. He asked him if he would play at the inaugural. He didn't put any stipulation of what he would play," Black said.
Others said the appearance was inappropriate.
"I think it was a horrible choice," GOP strategist Royal Masset said. "I hope nobody approved it."
Nugent, a hunting and gun-rights advocate, couldn't be reached for comment Thursday because he was hunting, a spokeswoman said.
The guitarist -- known as the "Motor City Madman" -- lived in Michigan most of his life before moving to Crawford in 2003. He is famed for his 1977 hit "Cat Scratch Fever."
News of Nugent's appearance at the ball drew criticism from civil rights leaders.
"Whenever someone sports the Confederate battle flag, many Texans will be offended, and rightly so, because of what it symbolizes: the enslavement of African-Americans and more recently the symbol of hate groups and terrorists," said Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Perry's mistake was inviting Nugent to be the entertainment at a "formal" event in the first place. This is "the Nug" we're talking about. Nugent and "tuxedo, cummerbund and black tie" don't go together. We don't want GOP inaugurals to look like the Democrat's (Wellstone & Coretta King) funerals.
Uh no...I expect Nugent to understand that when he is invited to a black tie affair that he is indeed required to where a tuxedo and black tie. If Nugent is unable to discuss his views on the second amendment without the aid of a costume and regalia then he needs to hone his argument better.
As another poster noted his " wildman schtick" is getting a bit tiresome, predictable and frankly boring. How many times can you watch Nugent prancing around claiming " I'm an alpha male! I'm an alpha male!" before it begins to look like the pathetic overcompensation of an aging mediocre rocker sliding into the twilight of his life without a hint of dignity or grace?
Nugent is becoming a parody of himself.
Since when did anyone say it's okay to have people show up at a governor's inaugural wearing "a Black Panther or NAACP t-shirt" and making "nasty remarks about whitey".
If Deval Patrick, our nation's only black governor, had ordered such "entertainment" at his inaugural, I guarantee you his career would screwed.
Well, I don't know about you, but I'D sure as hell shun some idiot musician on stage wearing a Mexican flag, chanting La Raza slogans at me.
Come on!...Nugent sucked as a guitarist...He was two things. Fast and loud. He had a tin ear. Nugent wasn't even nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The reason Nugent was so flamboyant on stage was to mask his lack of musical talent. Santana, Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan never swung across the stage on a rope and loin cloth. They didn't have to...Their guitar did the talking.
What if Terrible Ted owned a pitbull?
"Well I've never heard of civil war era northern flags used in that manner...most people from the north (sans Ted Nugent, who's from Michigan) have figured out the civil war ended 140 years ago and keep those flags in a museum. "
Others would realize just how insulting the "other than American" line from the OP was.
Ted Nugent for president. If you want someone in this country who still loves it and has some guts, then run Ted Nugent.
Please crack open a history book, read up on Texas during the civil war, and you can find out what happened to Governor Sam Houston when he TRIED to enforce "state's rights" and declare Texas a separate, sovereign nation that would remain NEUTRAL throughout the war and NOT give up their Independence to join the confederacy.
Texas is proof their agenda was anything BUT "State's Rights" Sam Houston, as you might discover, was against slavery. Tsk, tsk.
And I'm sure you know lots of rock musicians who parade around at formal events, or hell, any concert, in the north dressed in that attire.
He doesn't....He has blue tick hounds. Pitbulls won't hunt worth a damn.
Oh, that lack of objective accreditation must make him loathe his very existence. Please. Try again.
"And I'm sure you know lots of rock musicians who parade around at formal events, or hell, any concert, in the north dressed in that attire."
In a US flag? Certainly.
Somebody call the whaaaaaaambulance.
Yep...Nugent bills himself as a great guitarist and rock legend. Crock. He was mediocre musician and flashy showman. He was loud and he was fast and he stunk as a guitarist.
Just showing a little local pride. I'm sure nobody would think he was being an ass, right?

Read again, if you please.
