President Bush is expected to reach out to the families of two Texas Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a Mexican drug smuggler.

White House staff contacted former agent Ignacio Ramos' family early Friday, assuring them the president would call them soon, said Monica Ramos, the agent's wife.

He showed his gratitude by breaking his immunity agreement by attempting to smuggle an additional 1,000 pounds of pot into the U.S. the following October.

Do you have a link to that assertion?.....

The punishment these men should have gotten is arguable. Anything from Suspension, Suspension without pay. Dismissal. Any of these were optional. 15 years in jail is Bull excrement. The prosecutor is a definite butthole, bringing a criminal in to testify and granting total immunity is reprehensible. The whole case reeks.

I am not in any way saying these men should no face job action. I AM saying jail time is ridiculous.

You don't think that some of these Border Agents are taking bribes?

There are strong indications that this was a 'deal' that went bad. Why else would these agents try to cover up the incident. If they were above board, they would have reported it the moment it happened.

There are many Illegals getting across the border by buying off the agents that patrol the areas. You can guarantee it. Particularly the ones carrying millions of dollars worth of drugs when they cross.

I am on your side in this pal.

I agree wholeheartedly. A job action would have been the way to go, 15 years in jail is a sin.

I am not saying Mr. Bush should see that they are placed back on duty with no action, but he should at least keep them out of jail and expunge the criminal record.

It's Border bots. Shall we call Bush bots, Bush nuts? You're trying to hang a negative connotation on people who want our country secured on the invasion from the south.

It's also arguable as to the code they were charged and convicted under. That specific code as enacted by congress mandates a 10 yr minimum sentence. Or that's the way I've heard it explained. Hopefully the Appellate process will allow some of this to be reviewed.

I dont consider myself a Border nut although I do feel we cannot have a country where people merely walk back and forth across our borders as they please.

Some things are right and some are wrong.

Imprisoning these men is dead wrong. Especially on the word of an admitted criminal.

Here's one:

http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=26224

(snip)

Returning to Mexico, Aldrete-Davila related his misfortunes to his mother, who contacted the mother-in-law of Border Patrol agent Rene Sanchez. Sanchez in turn tipped off a member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, who went to Mexico to offer immunity if Osbaldo would act as a state’s witness against Ramos and Compean: the feds wanted to prosecute the agents shooting the alien narcotics supplier.

To sweeten the immunity deal, the feds paid for Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila’s medical treatment of his ailing backside – a taxpayer-funded recuperation at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. He showed his gratitude by breaking his immunity agreement in October 2005, when officers say he attempted to smuggle 1,000 pounds of marijuana into America. The prosecution further extended its immunity to this felony and sealed the indictment from jurors. Aldrete-Davila repaid this new shower of grace by suing the federal government for $5 million, alleging the shooting violated his civil rights. However, he agreed to help in their criminal prosecution, as well, and the feds are apparently happy to collaborate with the pusher as long as he helped put effective lawmen behind bars.

I don't know in this case as that was never asserted in court that I'm aware of.... However I'll agree that it's possible as they all are human and as humans we all have falacies. If these are truly rogue LEOs then they need to be weeded out and put away....

Then what should we do about all those BASHBOTS?

It's all very childish and quite ignorant to label anyone simply because they don't believe in the issues exactly the same way.

I also believe that one of the agents was "Agent of the Year" in 2005. It is an administrative suspension in the BP for discharging your weapon and not reporting it according to the union rep on Fox news last week. Worst they should of gotten was a five day suspension. I would buy both of them dinner and drinks during that time.

I AM saying jail time is ridiculous.

I completely agree. My only point is from what I've read there is another side. Certainly not worth more than administrative leave with pay from what I've seen, though. 10-12 years is ridiculous.

I haven't been to El Paso in a very long time. Are you saying JohnnyBoy Sutton's description isn't accurate?
"El Paso is a town that is very much a Border Patrol town. Border Patrol is loved and admired in El Paso. The huge presence of Border Patrol in El Paso has made it one of the safest cities in the United States, due to their presence there. "

Thanks.... So he was never arrested... Do we have a governmental source for the extension of the immunity deal to cover this 2nd attempt?

There are some on here trying to label those of us who regard protecting our border against an invasion, nuts. That says a lot about their not wanting to protect our country, our heritage, our way of life. They are FROBL it would seem.

I'm a border bot and damned proud of it.

They were prosecuted for attempted murder.

Thankfully, the jury was smart enough to acquit them on that charge.

Did they trace the bullet back to the agents' guns? They might not even have shot him.
