Venezuela's Chavez says "gringos go to hell"
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Sunday told the U.S. government to "go to hell" after it questioned his plan to seek special powers to legislate by decree as part of his self-styled socialist revolution.
Chavez, a Cuba ally re-elected by a landslide in December, this month launched a broad campaign to consolidate power by nationalizing key industries, seeking expanded executive powers and pushing for unlimited presidential re-election.
A State Department spokesman on Friday said Chavez's reform plans have caused "some concern," describing the proposal allowing presidents to rule by decree as "a bit odd" in a democracy.
"That is a sacrosanct legal authority of Venezuela, go to hell gringos! Go home! Go home!" Chavez said during his weekly Sunday broadcast. "We're free here, and every day we'll be more free."
Venezuela's legislature this week is expected to fully approve the Enabling Law that would give Chavez 18 months to decree legislation.
The former soldier has said he would use the expanded powers to end the autonomy of the nation's central bank, create a national police force and boost state control over the nation's oil industry, which provides around 11 percent of U.S. oil imports.
State Department spokesman Tom Casey on Friday said the legislation by decree proposal was "a sovereign right of Venezuela but certainly ... a bit odd in terms of a democratic system."
Chavez also plans to reform the nation's constitution, rewritten in 1999 on a campaign Chavez himself led, to boost state control over the economy and remove a two-term limit for presidents.

I say we should accept his offer of oil at a reduced price- but instead of using it, turn around and resell it at higher prices
A day late and a dollar short. Country by country, much of Latin America is going to the revolutionary dogs, and the State Department has just noticed it?
This wave of marxist revolutionary populism should have been stopped a couple of years ago, by American intervention. Now many other countries have sat up and taken notice that there were no consequences, and they want their revolutions too.
The whole hemisphere is going to be the worse for this, at a very dangerous time. Massive threats from Islam, long range threats from China, Europe going down the tubes. We don't need South America going down the tubes too.
The days of America going it alone are over, especially if we can't even control our borders. Not to speak of the fact that all the oil is passing into hostile hands.
But he has been known to date white girls...
So this marxist is a racist too.
"*sniff* Does this include me, Hugo?"
"No, Jimmy! You're my favorite pet Gringo!"
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Go to Hell yourself, Hugo, and take your leftist American friends with you.
Chavez might be strung up before then.
These people just love to unintentionally quote Orwell, don't they?
Egads- that's no girl- tyhat's an abomination
I wonder if that included Cindy?
Maybe use it to fill our reserves to capaity, thats about all we can do with it. If chavez causes a glut he cuts his own throat by causing oil prices to fall.
The reality of Chevez's oil is almost all of it is processed here in the USA. The only refineries capable of processing that thick, low grade tar are on US soil, Or up in Alberta, where they are already running at full capacity. Chavez is screwed should those refineries shut down for an extended period of time for "enviro-mental green house gas upgrading".
We have lots of options available to force Chavez's hand.
Gringo is a derogatory term.
yeah and I thinkj opec has glutted the market to reduce what mahmoud and chavez can profit from creating economic hardships. Chavez and ilk certainly are cutting their own throats- but Chavez denies he will be hurtiung and claims he has enougfh other countries willing to buy from him- we'll see though how long he can hold out.
We should actually be accepting his cheap oil and putting it both into reserve, and in a 'semi-reserve' as well, something with less restrictions that can be quickly tapped if prices go nuts again.
If you call that a girl.
Chavez and leftist media that helps him toot his horn fail to tell their faithful leftist readers that all those other countries Chavez claims will line up and buy his oil haven't any refineries capable of refining his low grade tar. It wouldn't be worth the cost of shipping it to China.
Maybe the whitehouse is just waiting for Chavez to put his money where his mouth is. So far it's just all hot air. We'll just have to wait and see where oil prices go I suppose. Something has to happen fairly soon.
I remember reading about an "Enabling Act" passed by the German Reichstag in 1934 for a similar reason. The more things change ...
