Because our dependence on foreign oil negatively affects our balance of payments and embroils or entangles us with some nasty people, e.g., Chavez and the Saudis. So forcibly cutting gasoline consumption by just 20% will alleviate all that? Wow. Silly me for doubting. What a happy world this will be.

Because our dependence on foreign oil negatively affects our balance of payments and embroils or entangles us with some nasty people, e.g., Chavez and the Saudis. Sadly all the oil produced is bought and sold on the open market each day....OPEC has uderstood this for decades...so one acutally buys from the pool not the source.

Whatever, I will be more careful to disregard your request next time.

Is that the goal of cutting gasoline consumption by just 20% then? My goal is to not send a penny to those Arab terrorists (and Venezuela).

My goal is to not send a penny to those Arab terrorists (and Venezuela). I agree...but the only way is to reduce TOTAL WORLD consumption by 20%...not just the U.S. That "could" reduce terrorist benefit, but it is unlikely, since OPEC would respond by raising prices.....

I will not listen tonight. It is useless. I do not like to think that this speech and rebuttal are being played out in Spanish. I figure I can hear it tomorrow.

My goal is to not send a penny to those Arab terrorists (and Venezuela). Then why do you need the Federal Government to force you to comply?
My goal is to participated in a thriving American economy with as few regulations as possible.
Good luck with your goal:

I predict this thread will make DU and LP look sane by comparison.

No way this will be crazier than the DU. Nothing makes them foam at the mouth more than a Bush speech.

Oh, no. Don't put words in my mouth. I said nothing about forcible. That's anathema to me. The man asked a general question about why it is desirable to reduce oil imports. I gave him an answer.
An analogy is that it is desirable to reduce gunshot crimes. However, I do not recommend forcibly removing guns from the hands of citizens.

Well, yes. That's a good point. But there is still a huge outflow of money from consumers to producers.

from Drudge
On comprehensive immigration reform:
Extending hope and opportunity in our country requires an immigration system worthy of America with laws that are fair and borders that are secure. When laws and borders are routinely violated, this harms the interests of our country
Yet
we cannot fully secure the border unless we take pressure off the border and that requires a temporary worker program.
New sales pitch for the same comprehensive immigration package (that is amnesty for illegals for those in Rio Linda).

Why reduce fuel consumption? If we can be as productive with less energy consumption, all of our incomes will increase dramatically.

Addendum: I went to "In Forum" to see your posts on this and other threads. I am in total agreement with you on that. In fact, more so. My opinion is that almost all SOU bilge, including what's rumored for tonight, would be nothing more than the clown masturbating--if it weren't such an insult to the Republic and the founding principles.
