Apart from causing that terrifying sensation, the technology is supposed to be harmless a non-lethal way to get enemies to drop their weapons."...so, if you feel like you're about to catch fire, don't worry, men--it's just a harmless non-lethal weapon designed to freak you out."

All we could do is watch them, he said. But if they had the ray gun, troops could have dispersed them. I wish they would modify the weapon so it would burn a cross on the enemy's forehead with the message "Jesus loves me". A hot flash is just not enough!

While the 130-degree heat was not painful, it was intense enough to make the participants think their clothes were about to ignite.
Would this really work in Iraq? It gets up to 115. 15 degrees is not going to make people run in seconds. If you want to make they think that their clothing will ignite, use a flamethrower.
Of course, this would work wonders in the US. It would be a great way to dispise Times square at about 2 AM on January 1st.

Our Generals are devolving into drooling morons.
The last thing the US Military needs is to be involved in "Nonlethal activities". It is immoral and I believe even criminal to place Soldiers and Marines lives at risk trying to "minimize" casualties on the enemies side. Such technologies only support GQ Generals who want to sit "connected" 500 -5000 miles away and control American GI's and their Junior Officers who actually do the fighting and dying like automatons. Generals for whom war is secondary to their Golf Game on Saturday and their pension fund. Kill the enemy, Kill their supporters and let our kids come home in one piece if at all possible.

Interesting advancement:
This will allow the enemy to fight another day.
And franklly, I have concern it will be used against America's own citizens.

Military officials say it could save the lives of innocent civilians and service members in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. More likely they'll turn it on American civilians for crowd control or give it to the police. Yes, I can definitely see that happening. Police are already tasering people. Looks like this ray gun will be their next new weapon of choice.
