WHAT'S JOHN McCain thinking?
"He has Mitt on the mind," said a Romney campaign consultant who requested anonymity.
"Mitt on the mind" is code for worrying that conservatives will ultimately desert Senator McCain for Romney in New Hampshire and across the country.
"Mitt on the mind" also explains why Rob Gray is now on board McCain's presidential exploratory committee as New England political strategist. Gray worked on Romney's 2002 gubernatorial campaign and knows well his record of conversion from moderate to hard-core conservative. Gray also relishes political hardball, although his latest effort amounted to an embarrassing whiff.
Gray played a critical role in Kerry Healey's losing 2006 campaign to become governor of Massachusetts. In that case, Gray took a moderate Republican with potential appeal to female and independent voters and turned her into a candidate with little appeal beyond a narrow conservative base.

......conservatives will ultimately desert Senator McCain for Romney in New Hampshire and across the country.....
Hmmm.... wouldn't conservatives be for the Manchurian candidate before they desert him?
** placemark ** ?
:0)
I'm tellin ya. McCain is delusional. I'm a conservative. Most of my friends and family are conservatives and I have to tell you, I was NEVER a McCain supporter and I live in his home state. We can't be McCain "deserters" if we never joined his camp can we?!
These politicos are really out of touch...McCain has no conservatives to do the desertion.
How can you desert McCain when conservatives I know including my Senator were never for him. I guess in the MSM anything is possible? Although given a choice between McCain and Romney, I will take John McCain so I don't intend to have to make that choice.
So who in your state keeps reelecting him in the primaries?
Like you, I'm still liking the idea of having a full field of candidates.
McCain is afraid conservatives might desert him??? You mean screwing us seven ways to Sunday for the last four years wasn't the way to win our loyalty? Who knew?
LOL - I think McCain was thinking it would be between him and Giuliani and that he would look more conservative. With Mitt in the race - Romney will take votes from McCain.
I want to know more about Mitt, but he might take my vote.
Has Giuliani declared yet?
I don't think he really wants the job. I think that he doesn't even think he could win anyhow.
I can stomach Mitt Romney a whole lot better than Mccain.
Excellent question for which I have no answer. Near as I can figure is there are a lot fewer conservatives in the state of Arizona than my little circle of friends and family might suggest. Or McCain has figured out a way of rigging the elections. In any event I have NEVER, in over 30 years of voting, cast my ballot for the sleezeball.
I can only do my part the rest is up to the rest of you.
I read he is against amnesty for illegals, that's when i decided he was the best pick out of potential winners. he is a good manager. He is very smart too. will see if he is smart enough to be elected. maybe someone else will pop up. After i saw Rudy talk about how he went out of his way and broke federal laws to help illegals in NYC i just couldn't/wouldn't want him in the WH.
btw, he's Ann Coulter's fav..... he must not be as liberal as some here claim, lol....
