Blurring the traditional lines of partisanship, conservative Mike Huckabee launched his bid for the Republican presidential nomination with a swipe at President Bush and a friendly nod to fellow Arkansan Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The former Arkansas governor assigned Bush some of the blame for failing to deliver on a 2000 campaign promise to be “a uniter, not a divider” and ease polarization in Washington.

I for one am sick and tired of this crap. Bush has reached out - I mean really reached out (including signing some of their putrid legislation) to the Democrats and still gets crapped on in return.

Stick a fork in Huckabee, his candidacy is over before it has begun.

I mean, it's mind-boggling. Bush congratulated Pelosi when she became Speaker. He has co-signed Ted Kennedy's education bill, signed the Medicare boondoggle, CFR. He has never criticized Democrats personally and have always tried to work with them.

Huckabee is simply a fool. The last thing conservatives need is yet another Republican who'll promise "bipartisanship" and try to work with the Democrats. Huckabee is also a nanny-stater, pro-illegal alien, and have expanded public health and education. He is NOT a conservative.

Agreed. I'm surprised he comes out with this stuff when his only real chance at nomination is to fill the hard, tough-talking conservative void left by the big guys, Romney, Giuliani and McCain. You can't get those votes if you're going on television proclaiming that Bill Clinton "embodies the American dream."

I didnt see Huckabee's whole appearance on the Daily Show recently but I got the impression he was trying to make nice with Jon Stewart. That is NOT what we need in a nominee or a leader. In the few moments I saw the show, I didn't hear Huckabee offer one word of defense of GWB when Stewart was saying he was dumb, etc.

What happened to conservatism? Conservatism used to be of the Reagan, and later, Gingrich, mold. Fiscal AND social conservative, fairly libertarian approach to government regulation, and pro defense.

Seems these days the conservative movement has become social conservative, but a pantywaist socialist otherwise, and as some would say, "that dog don't hunt."

Politicians who ran against Bush in 2006 won. Politicians who closely identified with Bush in 2006 lost. The smart money right now, and the increasing consensus among the electorate, says stick it to Bush to increase your stature among the electorate.

This may upset 'do or die' Freepers, but the problem with 'do or die' and 'all or nothing' is that you have a decent chance of 'die' and getting 'nothing.'

Seems like everyone's campaign is based on bashing Bush. They are all shallow wimps who stand for nothing. Where have all the "real" men gone? It would be great if some Iraq vets could run for office and throw the losers and quitters out.

I'll take a true leader like Bush any day. At least he has the courage to stand up for what he believes in.
