Venezuela is willing to buy from Russia Tor-M1 air defense missiles, the local media reported. The deal budget is estimated at roughly $290 million. In Venezuela, Tor-M1 missiles could be used together with the radars of Chinese make and 24 combat aircraft acquired in Russia.
Tor-M1s are the air defense missiles of fifth generation capable of opposing both the planes and the cruise missiles. It is yet the sole system in the world that will simultaneously spot and identify up to 48 targets. In one go, it can accompany and fire at two targets flying at the altitude of 20 to 6,000 meters.
Venezuela is aggressively acquiring armaments. Caracas has bought a big consignment of Kalashnikov submachine guns and agreed on deliveries of Su-30 fighters of Russia. Venezuelas President Hugo Chavez harbors no doubt about the U.S. plans to attack his country and, therefore, is buying the weapons at large.

They may be buying armaments, but do they know how to use them? Who is training them? Mother Russia?
Putin needs to drink a nice cup of tea....

Venezuelas President Hugo Chavez harbors no doubt about the U.S. plans to attack his country LOL! If only. "In related news, the U.S. Air Force has greatly decreased its purchases of ground target dummies for fighter and bomber practice. An unnamed colonel was quoted as saying, 'We didn't want to spend more U.S. taxpayer money on something our friends in South America are willing to provide at their own expense.'"
One wonders where Chavez was in 1991 and 2003, when it took U.S. forces about 72 hours each to establish total air dominance against Russian antiaircraft equipment.

And to think, Russia has a contract with Cuba to rearm it in exchange for access to off-shore drilling.

Since Putin is making sure America's worst enemies are armed to the teeth our policy should be identical in terms of making a better armed NATO extending directly to Russia's front doorstep. Two can place this game.

A Latin American Left Watch ping here.
Flavius, thank you for the post and Thunder90 thank you for the ping.
By way of personal comment here, this arms deal is meant to threaten Colombia and it will also be watched very closely in Chile, which has begun to worry that Evo Morales' ties to Chavez, which include military weaponry and assistance, may portend for a clash over Bolivia's claim that it should have access to the Pacific through land Chile annexed after a war late in the 19th century. But Colombia is the real target.

Good, because if apparent President-for-Life Chavez keeps up like this Venezuela runs the risk of becoming the only North Korea south of the Border, and a junior member of The Axis of Evil.
