Profanity and an off-color comment about Cajuns by Nick Saban that he thought would remain private have become public, causing the former Dolphins coach to issue an apology Wednesday through the University of Alabama. During a 40-minute meeting with three South Florida newspaper reporters, including one from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, on Jan. 4 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., after being named the Crimson Tide's head coach, Saban relayed an anecdote about the reaction to his hiring at Louisiana State University, a Southeastern Conference rival where he coached from 2000 to 2004. Saban told the reporters that "you guys won't be able to print this" before conveying what he said was a telephone call he had received from an unidentified member of LSU's board of trustees. "He was walking down the street yesterday before the Sugar Bowl," Saban said. "He calls me. There was a guy working in the ditch, one of those coon-ass guys that talk funny. I can't talk like them, but he can. Most people in Louisiana can." Continuing his story, Saban then repeated the worker's vulgar comment about him going to Alabama. Saban laughed and then added, "But that's how [LSU fans] are, though. They're passionate, hardcore." I'm from south Louisiana and some folks find the term offensive. Most don't care.
Yep, I've been in the business for 35 years.
Besides, the term "redneck" is not used for the entire people group (race); the n-word is. Few would call an American of European descent not from the South a "redneck," much less an immigrant/tourist/etc. from the UK, Germany, and so on. American of African descent from all over the country, and even from other parts of the world, are referred to by some using the n-word. If both are offensive terms, then both shouldn't be used, but one is far more exclusive than the other and is more culturally/ethnically insulting rather than racist per se.
Sounds lke the uproar over the proper use of the word "niggardly" and it's uneducated response to that use.

Now Alabama fans will have something to yell at LSU when they play next fall.
I know a couple people that consider themselves coon-ass and it certainly isn't a designation they shy away from. good people, and they do talk funny...and we all have a good time with it.
I also put fuel on American and Canadian Great Lakes steamships in Duluth/Superior when they stopped for iron ore or grain. Almost all the crews on the Canadian boats were French-speakers from eastern Canada.
When did "coon-ass cajun" become a bad thing to say? I have friends in Lake Charles, LA who claim that title with more than just a little bit of pride.
It's still a redneck everywhere outside Louisiana. Ya'll just see it different.

Are they saying that coon ass is a dirty word to Cajuns? Have they ever known any 'Cadians? I doubt it.
Cracker comes from Gaelic craicer and refers to someone who talks too much.

Well, after searching online for a minute or two, I think the C-A stuff is just an excuse to get folks to listen to the "funny" Coach Saban told about what one of the LSU trustees said about Saban taking the Bama job. It was the off the record part that Coach Saban didn't want folks to hear, but he was obviously amused by it enough to tell some reporters "off the record."
I was about to say. That is banted about as high praise in the circles I have been around. About as offensive as saying homeboy in La.
