As a senior staffer in the Senate Republican leadership put it, “You know he’s nuts, right?”

I can't think of a better illustration of why this party deserved to get its a** kicked last November.

He needed to be the Senate leader. If he had been, the ball-less wonder known as Frist would not have frittered away the GOP advantage.

Go to this poll and give Coburn your vote anyway (be sure to give Hill low marks while your there).

To me, the U.S. Senate is the most vile of institutions in government. Let me just list the names some of the members of "the world's most exclusive club": Kennedy, Kerry, McCain, Hagel, Byrd, Specter, Dodd, Reid, Boxer, Feinstein, Clinton, Webb, Nelson, Dole, Rockefeller, Schumer; and let us not forget some recently departed "greats" like Edwards, Chafee, Thurmond. Just a disgusting group of folks.

Coburn seems to be one of the few decent people there.

I s'pect if that bunch of clowns we call Republicans in Washington DC exhibited less clownage as Coburn suggested, they would not now be a minority party. I also s'pect if these clowns weren't such a significant bunch of circus reprobates as they turned out to be, many many more local candidates that were swept away because conservative voters saw no point in wasting time at the polls would not have been swept.

If you lined up all national Republicans against a wall and gunned 'em down about every six to eight years, you would pick off a few Coburn like people that aren't a waste of air, but, for the most part, you would create a net plus for the party and the nation by replacing them.

You could likely say the same for Democrats, but the Democrat base is populated by Bozos so sincere they make National Republicans seem attractive by comparison. Now that should not be taken as a step back from the desire to see them field 30 caliber bullets every six to eight years. The ultimate goal should be national improvement, after all.

Here's what I'm curious about. What does an island in Alaska with 50 residents have that would convince a Senator to put his prestige on the line for them?

One possible answer is Ketchikan International Airport, served by Alaska Airlines, is on the island, and putting the bridge there would increase the value of the airport to Alaska AIrlines somehow

I'm glad we sent him to Washington

I'm glad you sent him too. I only wish we could send 60 or 70 more just like him. Just imagine, a public servant who actually believes in serving the public interest instead of his own, what is this world coming too?

He also proposed the death penalty for abortionists, aka baby murderers. Based just on that, if he ever runs for president he can count on my vote in advance. Americans who abort unborn babies are no better than the Germans who operated Hitler's gas chambers.

“The Democrats are amazing,” said one of Coburn’s senior staff. “If just one more of them had changed votes, we would have won, and then they could have claimed it as a victory. But they’re so in love with spending money, they’ll fall on their swords to protect a Republican earmark.”

And vice versa, I expect. There's the whole problem. That's why it really doesn't matter which party "controls" the House and Senate...or the Presidency, for that matter. The same agenda is going to be advanced, regardless.

Coburn is only Senator I would be proud to vote for.

A real-life Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. Tom Coburn doesn't care much for how they do business up there. He wants to change things and that's why he's a gadfly. The usual rule of thumb in D.C is: "when in doubt, spend." Tom is a conservative modern day Don Quixote tilting against the windmills of statism and timeless power. He's my hero precisely because he's out of the mainstream.
